Class of 2024 in-state quarterback Tyler Cherry formally announced he was no longer committed to Duke on Friday.
And where he will play for his college freshman season in 2024 won’t be a mystery for long.
The Greenwood, Ind. (Center Grove H.S.) senior signal caller tells The Daily Hoosier he’s down to Indiana and Michigan State, and he has told both staffs he will choose a school and sign this week during the college football early signing period (Dec. 20-22).
The 6-foot-5 Cherry is a 4-star prospect and ranked the No. 15 overall quarterback in the high school senior class according to the On3 Industry Average.
Former head coach Tom Allen pursued Cherry before he committed to Duke in May. But coaching changes at both schools after the 2023 season led to a second opportunity for the Hoosiers.
New head coach Curt Cignetti and his staff have been aggressively pursuing the former high school teammate of current IU quarterback Tayven Jackson — and they’ve made a strong impression.
“Coach Cignetti has a great overall vision for the program,” Cherry told The Daily Hoosier. “He believes that this program can win and win quickly, and he has no doubt.”
One of the reasons Cignetti has been successful throughout his career is because he has a proven history of developing quarterbacks.
Under the trio of Cignetti, offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan, and quarterbacks coach Tino Sunseri, over the last three years James Madison quarterbacks combined for 10,816 yards, 119 TDs, 18 INTs. Four of the five quarterbacks for Cignetti at JMU earned conference player of the year honors.
“Coach Tino and Coach Shanahan run a great offense and the staff has an amazing track record of QBs that they have each worked with,” Cherry said.
Cherry has taken multiple visits to IU this month, and the IU staff visited him in home as well.
Cherry led Center Grove to an 11-2 record and the Indiana 6A state semifinals while breaking multiple single-season school passing records. He completed 218-of-305 passes (71.4 percent) for 3,156 yards with 38 passing touchdowns, six interceptions, and four rushing scores.
