Class of 2025 5-star point guard Mikel Brown, Jr. has September official visits set to Indiana and Kentucky.
Those visits were first reported by the Indiana 247Sports site and Kentucky On3 site, respectively.
Brown’s father confirmed the Sept. 13-15 official visit to Indiana with The Daily Hoosier. The Kentucky visit is Sept. 27-29.
Eric Bossi of 247Sports is also reporting upcoming visits by Brown to Maryland, UCF and Arizona later in October and November.
The visit to Indiana will be Brown’s first trip to Bloomington, and something the IU staff has been working on for a long time. IU offered the Florida native nearly two years ago. When TDH caught up with Brown in July at the Adidas 3SSB Championships in Rock Hill, S.C., he said the family was looking to get an Indiana visit scheduled.
The 6-foot-3 Brown is a 5-star according to the On3 Industry Average. He’s the No. 12 overall player, and the No. 2 point guard nationally according to that outlet.
Guard play was not a strength for IU in 2023-24, but Brown was paying attention the year prior when Jalen Hood-Schifino was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year.
“It was phenomenal how they just let him rock, and that’s pretty big for me,” Brown said to TDH about Hood-Schifino a year ago when we caught up with him on the Adidas Circuit.
There has been speculation Brown could wait until the winter or spring to make a college decision. If he does that he’ll have a chance to see how the revamped backcourt featuring Myles Rice and Kanaan Carlyle is utilized in Mike Woodson’s offense.
When we caught up with Brown in July, he suggested he intends to watch Indiana play this season while discussing what he’s looking for in a playing style.
“Really just having the freedom to play through mistakes, that’s one of the biggest things for me,” Brown told TDH. “And having a coach who has 100 percent trust in you to make the right play so you play free and play your game. I think that’s big. That’s going to be big for me in watching Indiana play this season to watch how he plays with those guards.”
Brown also spoke to TDH about what he’s looking for in a college program.
“Obviously the fit has to be right on the court, but I also want an off-the-court environment to where it’s family based,” he said. “I want to be in a family environment, where they’re going to take care of me when I’m away from my family, and my family can visit anytime they want. That whole thing with the family atmosphere is really big for me.”
There has also been speculation Brown, who has had an endorsement deal with Adidas for a while, could end up at a school with that brand. He recently announced he will be transferring to Daytona, Fla. based DME Academy to play his senior season. DME Academy is a featured Adidas program.
Indiana and Louisville are the main Adidas schools recruiting Brown. Kansas could be a wildcard program as well. Kentucky, Texas, Providence, Alabama, Maryland, Arizona, UCF and Ole Miss are some of the non-Adidas schools involved. He has already taken official visits to Providence, Ole Miss, and Alabama.
Brown is the fifth IU class of 2025 target to schedule an official visit over the next couple months.
Also coming are Jalen Haralson (Aug. 31), Braylon Mullins (Sept. 20), Trent Sisley (Sept. 20), and Eric Reibe (Oct. 4). Bryson Tiller took an official visit back in December.
