The 1984 United States men’s Olympic basketball team will forever go down in history as the final amateur-level U.S. team to win an Olympic gold medal in men’s basketball.
Considered one of the strongest teams in U.S. history at the time, legendary coach Bob Knight was the head coach of the team. Joining him was Steve Alford, then a 19-year-old who had just completed his freshman season of college at Indiana.
40 years ago today, Team USA completed a perfect run through the games in Los Angeles with a 96-65 win over Spain.
The team that was selected from April to June and molded by Knight, won its games by an average of 32.1 points. Knight’s team included future NBA greats Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing.
Watch below as Alford joined Nevada Sports Net to relive his experience playing in the 1984 Olympic Games.
Further below you can see the final minutes of the gold medal game at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif.
