After a 42-13 win at UCLA and a 3-0 start to the 2024 season, IU football is now firmly on the national radar.
Indiana received seven votes in Sunday’s top-25 Coaches Poll following week three. That effectively places them as the No. 39 team in the nation according to the coaches. They received one vote the previous week.
Meanwhile in the AP Top-25, IU received 13 votes in the poll released on Sunday, placing them at No. 34.
The Hoosiers have not been ranked in the AP Top-25 or the Coaches Poll since a week one loss at Iowa in 2021.
The advanced metrics are beginning to fawn over the Hoosiers as well.
ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) currently slots IU in as the No. 19 team in the country, with a projected 9-3 record and 23.4% chance to make the College Football Playoff.
Yes, you read that right.
Going into the season, FPI ranked Indiana No. 77, and 18 of 18 in the Big Ten. At that time IU was predicted to lose all of their Big Ten games. Now they are predicted to win all of their remaining games except at Ohio State. The 9-3 aggregate prediction accounts for the improbability that a season goes according to plan with no missteps along the way.
Only Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon and USC are currently ranked higher than IU according to FPI.
ESPN’s SP+ had the Hoosiers No. 81 entering the season. After this weekend’s games, they’ve jumped all the way to No. 40. Bill Connelly, the publisher of SP+, said on Sunday if all of the preseason data was flushed out of the algorithm, Indiana would currently be the No. 8 team.
There are still 10 Big Ten teams ahead of Indiana according to SP+.
The Hoosiers have a good chance to move to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2020. Indiana hosts Charlotte on Saturday at Noon ET.
