Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and wide receiver Ty Fryfogle earned mention on the Maxwell Award Watch list for college football’s best all-around player. Linebacker Micah McFadden and cornerback Tiawan Mullen, meanwhile, made the watch list for the Bednarik Award, which goes to the nation’s top defensive player. Former Indiana guard and administrator Chris Reynolds, now the vice president of intercollegiate athletics at Bradley, will chair the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee for the 2022-23 school year according to an NCAA release. That also means he will chair the committee that selects the field for the NCAA Tournament. Reynolds played at Indiana from 1989-93, helping the Hoosiers win Big Ten titles in 1991 and 1993 and a spot in the Final Four in 1992. After seeing four pitchers taken on the second day of the Major League Baseball draft, Indiana saw its two most productive hitters in the 2021 season taken on Day 3. Third baseman Cole Barr was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 15th round and outfielder Grant Richardson was taken in the 17th-round of what this year is a 20-round draft. Last summer was supposed to be Gabe Bierman’s best opportunity to show off for big league scouts. Early in his sophomore year, he learned that he would have a roster spot in the Cape Cod League, the most prestigious of the college-age, wooden-bat summer leagues, which meant he’d be pitching against some of the nation’s best hitters and judged against some of its best pitchers.
