James Madison recently had two of the top up-and-coming coaches in college football and basketball. While Curt Cignetti patrolled the football sidelines in Harrisonburg, Va. from 2019 to 2023, Mark Byington was making a name for himself on the hardwood there from 2020 to 2024. You already know what Cignetti accomplished in his first year as a head coach at the Power Four level. It appears Brad Stevens will not be the next coach of Indiana basketball, according to a report. National college basketball reporter Jeff Goodman posted on X a direct statement from the Celtics executive on Friday afternoon. “BREAKING: Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens told The Field of 68 that he is not a candidate for the Indiana University job,” Goodman said on X. Indiana will debut a new look on Friday evening inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall when the Hoosiers host UCLA. In a social media post, IU basketball says they are “Honoring & celebrating the connecting threads of Black Excellence” with special uniforms for the Friday night contest. Two former IU football players will be representing the program at the 2025 NFL Draft Combine. Quarterback Kurtis Rourke and interior defensive lineman C.J. West both received invitations according to the official announcement from the league on Thursday. Rourke was one of just 15 quarterbacks invited to the annual event. On his way to leading IU to an 11-2 season, Rourke set the Indiana single-season record for passing touchdowns (29) and produced just the fifth 3,000-yard passing season in program history with 3,042 yards. A second high major nonconference game has emerged for IU basketball’s 2025-26 nonconference slate. Who coaches that game for Indiana, however, remains to be seen. The Hoosiers are finalizing a deal to play Marquette at the United Center in Chicago according to Jon Rothstein. “Indiana and Marquette are finalizing an agreement to meet next season in a neutral site game at the United Center in Chicago, according to multiple sources,” Rothstein wrote on X for College Hoops Today. Indiana might have played more zone defense on Tuesday evening in East Lansing than Bob Knight coached teams utilized in all games combined throughout his entire career. And ironically, it was that IU zone that kept Michigan State’s Tom Izzo from passing the legendary former Hoosiers head coach as the all-time leader in Big Ten wins.
