The IU basketball program held a former player reunion over the weekend. Players as recent as Trayce Jackson-Davis were there, and a player from the 1953 national championship squad was in attendance as well. Phil Byers came to IU from Evansville, Ind. in 1951.  He played both football and basketball for a year for the Hoosiers before deciding to focus just on hoops after one season. Donaven McCulley was not on the field as Indiana’s offense started their first drive of the 2024 season. That was notable after first-year coach Curt Cignetti made comments during the offseason suggesting he was at times frustrated with the 6-foot-5 senior wideout from Indianapolis. But McCulley’s absence from the field became permanent against Florida International when he took a hit to the head and neck area in the first half.  Cignetti shared after the game McCulley was not medically cleared to return after suffering that blow. Indiana announced four players who will miss the 2024 season on their pregame availability report Saturday afternoon. Offensive lineman Nick Kidwell was previously reported.  Here are all four players out for the season: Nick Kidwell – OL Josh Philostin – DB Andrew DePaepe – DE Vince Fiacable – OL Kidwell is a seventh-year guard who was expected to start.  Fiacable might have been a contender to see snaps on the interior of the line in Kidwell’s absence.
