It is no secret that Indiana’s traditional non-conference schedule is designed in part to increase the odds of reaching a post season bowl game. Since college football expanded to a 12 game schedule, a .500 or better record has been generally required to become bowl eligible. With most teams abandoning non-conference play in 2020 due to the pandemic, reaching the .500 mark won’t be easy. Indiana appears likely to find at least four wins in its revised eight game all-Big Ten schedule, but a ninth game against a to be determined Big Ten West opponent certainly leaves things hazy. In…

In 2003 Indiana fought St. John’s and a December Ohio snow storm on its way to a national championship at the NCAA’s College Cup. Because of the less than ideal conditions often encountered during the men’s soccer NCAA Tournament, many believe that the season is more optimally suited for the spring. Consider 2021 a trial run. The NCAA Division I fall championships will be conducted in the spring as outlined in recommendations from the Division I Council and supported by the Division I Presidential Forum, the Division I Board of Directors decided Tuesday. “The plan sent to us by the…
The history of the Indiana football program is replete with examples of positive momentum meeting an unfortunate turn of events. During the golden age in the 40’s, head coach Bo McMillin left suddenly for the Detroit Lions. Less than two years after a 1968 Rose Bowl appearance, and on their way to what appeared to be a third straight winning season, John Pont’s Hoosier team saw 10 players quit the team mid-season in 1969. The program failed to achieve another winning season for a decade. Head coach Terry Hoeppner seemed to have everything going in the right direction before his…
Indiana has been spending a lot of time, virtually anyway, in the backyard of the University of Virginia. The Hoosiers offered a scholarship to class of 2022 Charlottesville wing Justin Taylor a few weeks ago, and they are taking a close look at his high school teammate too. St. Anne’s Belfield School sophomore forward Carter Lang had an impressive freshman season that caught IU’s attention. Lang’s school first reported Indiana’s interest back in July. As a freshman, Lang averaged 12 points and 9.1 rebounds and 1 block per game in just over 18 minutes per contest. Lang shot 63 percent…
Few players in the IU basketball lore sit on a loftier perch than Calbert Cheaney. Cheaney’s 2,613 career points from 1989-93 still stand as the most in IU and Big Ten history. The three-time All-American led the Hoosiers to 105 wins during his four seasons on campus, including four NCAA Tournament appearances, two Big Ten titles and a run to the 1992 Final Four. Cheaney averaged 22.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game en route to earning Big Ten and National Player of the Year honors as a senior in 1993. He was selected No. 6 overall in the 1993…
Aaron Steinfeldt is a 6-foot-5 and 245 pound tight end from Bloomington North High School. The class of 2021 tight end committed to IU in April. The No. 37 ranked tight end according to the 247Sports Composite, Steinfeldt has helped lead the Cougars to a 3-2 mark on the 2020 season. Steinfeldt’s senior season highlights through five games are below. He has 13 catches for 285 yards and two scores thus far on the 2020 campaign. For two years in a row, a ligament injury derailed a debut season for Romeo Langford. In his lone season at IU, a torn thumb ligament on his shooting hand hindered Langford for months. Now as a rookie for the Boston Celtics, another torn ligament ended his season. “Romeo Langford this morning underwent successful surgery to repair the scapholunate ligament in his right wrist, the Celtics said in a release. “He will miss the remainder of the 2019-20 NBA season. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.” The release did not indicate how long the rehab process will take. Langford…
With Raheem Mostert hobbled, a big opportunity opened up for Tevin Coleman. It didn’t last long. The former IU star suffered a knee injury on Sunday in New York soon after Mostert, and now Coleman will be on the shelf for a while. According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the 49ers running back will miss multiple weeks with a knee injury. “49ers’ RB Tevin Coleman is expected to miss “multiple weeks” with the knee injury he suffered Sunday,” a source told Schefter. It was not clear when during Sunday’s game Coleman suffered the injury. Coleman has carried the ball 18…
September 22, 1945 — Ann Arbor, Michigan The challenge to open the 1945 season could not have been much greater. Indiana knew it had something special going into the season, but an immediate tall task stood in their way. The Michigan Wolverines — on the road. The Hoosiers traveled to Ann Arbor knowing they could slay Michigan. They did it a year earlier by a convincing 20-0 margin. That was only the third win by IU over Michigan since 1900, and the first Wolverine Big Ten loss since 1942. Perhaps Bo McMillin’s Hoosiers caught Michigan off guard in 1944? Maybe. …
