Former Indiana football defensive lineman Chris Beaty was tragically murdered over the weekend in downtown Indianapolis. Beaty was a pillar of the Indianapolis community and closely involved alum of both IU in general and the football program. Beaty’s family released a statement on Wednesday morning and established a memorial fund that will benefit both IU and Indianapolis Cathedral High School in his name.  A link to contribute to the fund is included below in the family’s statement. The first concrete sign of the return of IU athletics came on  Wednesday when the school announced plans for a limited return beginning on June 15. The first group to start voluntary workouts will be members of the football team beginning June 15, subject to a series of pre-participation protocols along with ongoing evaluations.  The second group will consist of the men’s and women’s basketball players, who will begin voluntary workouts on June 18. As you have no doubt heard, former Evansville Reitz High School point guard Khristian Lander has reclassified and will join the IU basketball program for the 2020-21 season. Lander was averaging 21 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.6 assists for his junior season at Reitz. The Panthers (17-7) had advanced to the Class 4A Seymour Regional before the 2019-20 campaign was canceled. Several players and coaches from the IU basketball team joined forces in a short video to address the ongoing racial tension in the United States after the murder of George Floyd. With the message “Racism, in no way, shape or form, can be tolerated,” the program published the video on its various social media platforms. While most of the statements from sports coaches have been unilateral and in written form, Indiana’s video is unique in that it was delivered by several members from the team, and from both players and coaches of various races. Indiana isn’t particularly deep on its offensive line, but one of the projected interior players in the two-deep rotation is going to be around for an extra year. Stanford graduate transfer Dylan Powell was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA, giving him two fulls seasons in Bloomington. Indiana’s 2020-21 season opening opponent is known if college basketball returns on schedule. According to public records obtained by D1 Docket, the Hoosiers will tip things off against New Jersey Institute of Technology on Nov. 10 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Hailing from Newark, N.J., the Highlanders finished the 2019-20 campaign with a 9-21 mark and they were the No. 296 team in the country according to Ken Pom.
