Indiana spring sport athletes that appeared to have lost the last season of their college careers due to the COVID-19 cancellations are getting a second chance. The NCAA announced on Monday that it is allowing schools to provide spring sport athletes with another season of competition. The ruling would appear to primarily impact IU baseball, softball, golf, tennis, track and rowing. The decision does not impact winter athletes such as IU basketball seniors Devonte Green and De’Ron Davis. Both players had already decided to forego any further eligibility anyway when they pursued commercial activities such as the creation of Cameo…
March 30, 1940 — Kansas City, Missouri It was a night where icons were remembered, legends were made, and traditions began. The founder of the game of basketball, James Naismith died during the start of the 1939-40 season. Before IU and Kansas played in the title game on this night there was a ceremony that paid tribute to Naismith. Although he’d invented the sport in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891, James Naismith had later claimed, “Basketball really had its origin in Indiana, which remains the center of the sport.” In 1898 Naismith was hired by Kansas to coach basketball and teach…
March 30, 1987 — New Orleans, Louisiana The 1986-87 Indiana Hoosiers were probably the program’s least talented national championship team, but led by unrelenting senior Steve Alford and a strong supporting cast, the Hoosiers found a way to earn the school’s fifth title. But the outcome would have almost certainly been different if IU head coach Bob Knight had continued his stance against recruiting junior college players. While Alford was the clear leader of the team, it would be one of the first transfers ever in Knight’s program that changed the course of history on this night. The Hoosiers trailed,…
IU great Isiah Thomas went in depth on his basketball life for well over an hour on the Knuckleheads podcast with fellow Chicago area natives Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson last week. The 58 year old Thomas played two seasons for Indiana and helped lead the Hoosiers to the 1981 national championship. March 28, 1992, Albuquerque, N.M. After UCLA beat Indiana 87-72 to open the 1991-92 season in Springfield, Mass., it was difficult to imagine what would happen when the teams met again just over four months later. Indiana completely flipped the script from that November night, as the Hoosiers beat the Bruins, 106-79, before 16,160 at the Pit in the final game of the West Regional. Indiana missed 12 of their first 16 shots, but with UCLA struggling from the field as well, the Hoosiers were still able to start fast in the first half by building up a hefty rebounding…
March 28, 1981 — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania There was something very familiar and comfortable about the Spectrum in Philadelphia for Indiana head coach Bob Knight. After winning the 1976 national title in the building, Knight returned to the same bench, even the same chair, where he sat five years earlier. After a slow start against Dale Brown’s LSU Tigers at the 1981 national semifinals, Knight’s Hoosiers achieved a familiar result as well. Neither team shot well in the first half, and IU star point guard Isiah Thomas struggled with foul trouble, picking up a third a few minutes before the break.…
The calendar says late March, which means three years ago we were first introduced to a young up and coming guy named Ryan Joseph Miller as the next head coach of Indiana basketball. The 38 year old man that everyone of course knows as Archie came to Indiana after a successful six year stint at Dayton. With three full seasons in the books, the trend lines for the IU program under Miller are pointing up, with steady, albeit slow progress. Today we take a look back at what Miller described as the pillars of his program three years ago, and…

There will two former Hoosiers playing in the nation’s capital this fall. According to reports the Washington Redskins have reached an agreement with former IU receiver Cody Latimer. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media was the first to report the news. Latimer, who spent the past two seasons with the Giants, will join former Hoosier offensive lineman Wes Martin in Washington. The 27 year old Latimer played 15 games with 10 starts in 2019. He made 24 catches for 300 yards, both career bests, and he added two touchdowns. Latimer saw action on 369 offensive snaps and 43 on special teams…
