It is always a challenge to keep the top high school football talent in the state of Indiana home. That will be true once again with an in-state prospect ranked inside the national top-100 in the class of 2023. Recruiting service 247Sports released its first class of 2023 rankings, and Merrillville, Ind. linebacker Drayk Bowen cracked the top-100 as the No. 61 player in the country. The 2023 rankings will of course fluctuate in the coming years, but as it stands Bowen is just the fourth in-state player in the last five years to be included in the 247 top-100,…

The high only lasted a couple hours. That is just how it is in 2020. A quick dose of good news, followed by the latest kick in the gut. As they competed at their first day of fall training last week, IU’s soccer players and coaches did so knowing that the thrill might soon be gone. It didn’t take long. “On our first day of training we were definitely riding a high and then a couple hours later it was ‘by the way, you guys are not playing any games this fall,'” midfielder Joe Schmidt told reporters this week. Things…
After intense scrutiny from administrators, coaches, players, fans and the some members of the media, Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren has expanded on the league’s rationale for postponing fall sports. In an open letter to the Big Ten community, Warren laid out several factors that led the league’s university presidents and chancellors to vote for postponement. Warren also reiterated that the decision will not be revisited, while introducing the concept of a “winter” season if the conditions are acceptable. Warren’s full letter follows. An Open Letter to the Big Ten Community I write on this occasion to share with you…

When we last heard from Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren, the rationale for cancelling fall sports, including football, could not have been more clear. “Our overarching issue that we had to always keep at the top of our mind was that the health, safety, the wellness, both physical and mental for our student athletes, was going to be at the top of my list,” Warren told Dave Revsine on the Big Ten Network. Since that interview last week, the only thing that now seems clear is that player safety and wellness was not central to the decision. Truth be told,…
IU basketball legend Quinn Buckner recently joined the Tom’s Talks/76ers podcast network to talk about his history of winning at all levels of the game of basketball. Buckner was a state champion in high school in Illinois, a national champion at IU, an Olympic gold medalist, and an NBA champion with the Boston Celtics. Note: There is some introductory talk about the Pacers at the beginning. Go to the eight minute mark if you would like to skip ahead to Buckner discussing his career with Tom McGinnis, including plenty of discussion of his IU days. Want us to share your…
For the second summer in a row, IU basketball is searching for an assistant coach. After three seasons in Bloomington, Bruiser Flint is off to Kentucky to reunite with good friend John Calipari, leaving head coach Archie Miller on the hunt for a replacement once again. Indiana finds itself searching for a new assistant coach at an interesting time. With its athletic department hemorrhaging tens of millions of dollars due to the loss of a football season, it will be especially challenging, but not impossible to lure a high profile candidate to IU via a big pay raise. Of course…
UPDATE: Morgan played 25 minutes and scored 3 points while corralling 7 rebounds and adding an assist and a steal. With a team best +17, Morgan was one of only two players on the Jazz with a positive plus/minus ratio. Ten days ago it looked like Juwan Morgan’s season was over. Unable to put any weight on his leg, Morgan left an NBA game in Orlando in a wheelchair. Today, Morgan will be starting in his first ever NBA Playoff game when the Utah…

New names continue to emerge on the recruiting trail in the class of 2021 for IU, and the latest is Georgia based guard Miles Kelly. The 6-foot-5 Kelly averaged 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals per contest for Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia during the 2019-20 season. If that city sounds familiar, it is because it is the home of Indiana senior guard Al Durham, Jr. Kelly knows of Durham, but this recruitment isn’t being driven by a relationship there. Instead, IU assistant coach Mike Roberts, generally the staff’s point person in the Southeast, is trying…
