As previously reported, the Indiana football program has pulled an alum from the NFL to be their next strength coach. Coming to the Hoosiers from the New York Giants, Aaron Wellman’s official title at IU will be senior assistant athletic director for football performance. Wellman replaces another Indiana alum. David Ballou left the football program to take the same job at Alabama. The full release on Wellman from Indiana follows. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head football coach Tom Allen welcomed on Monday Aaron Wellman as senior assistant athletic director for football performance. Wellman comes to Bloomington after four years as the New York Giants strength…
This would have been the night. An entire country would have been analyzing the just released 2020 NCAA Tournament brackets, trying to figure out which No. 12 seed would pull the upset this time, and who the heck Prairie View A&M is. For Indiana fans, tonight would have been a small celebration. A realization that, after a four year wait, their beloved Hoosiers were back in the NCAA Tournament. How do we know? While any one bracketology is nothing more than a children’s show, or so we’ve heard, when you aggregate 90 of them you probably have a pretty good…
The bad news keeps coming if you were holding out hope that the NCAA might at least release the 2020 men’s and women’s tournament brackets on Selection Sunday. Indiana senior guard Devonte Green expressed publicly his wish that the NCAA release the bracket despite the fact that the tournament will not be played. Both Green and fellow senior De’Ron Davis had established a goal coming into the 2019-20 season to reach the tournament for the first time in their IU careers. But in a statement released on Sunday, NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball Dan Gavitt made it clear that…
The abrupt cancellation of the 2020 men’s NCAA Tournament due to the COVID-19 virus left many scratching their heads. Postpone? Of course. The world as we know it has seemingly been postponed. But to completely cancel college athletics’ marquee event without even giving things a chance to play out seemed extreme and perhaps unnecessary — at least as an initial move. The NCAA could have always postponed now, and then canceled later as this unprecedented situation evolved. Many immediately jumped to the logistical concerns. Where would you play the games? How could you find the hotel rooms? Putting the event…
March 14, 1981, Dayton, Ohio With a field of just 48 teams, there were no easy games in the 1981 NCAA Tournament. For No. 14 ranked Indiana, an opening round game against the No. 18 team — the Maryland Terrapins — would provide an immediate major challenge. Or at least that’s what everyone thought. Maryland brought a pair of All-ACC talents with them to Dayton for that first round NCAA battle with IU. Senior Albert King led the Terrapins in scoring at 18 points per contest, and he would go on to a nine-year NBA career. Junior Buck Williams was…
March 14, 1987 — Indianapolis, Ind. Before a record crowd of more than 34,000 at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Auburn had a plan to take down No. 1 seed Indiana in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. And for six minutes, it worked masterfully. In what was in essence a home game for the Hoosiers, Auburn was the faster, more physical team out of the gate. The Tigers led 24-10 with 14 minutes remaining in the first half as they crashed the offensive glass and beat IU up and down the floor. Indiana head coach Bob Knight, who…
Indiana head coach Archie Miller knew exactly what he and his staff needed to do when the Big Ten and NCAA pulled the plug on the 2019-20 season. There was really only one thing they could do. “The first thing that we talked about as a staff is what high school games can we hit,” Miller told Jeff Goodman on the Good-n-Plenty podcast. That was Thursday, in the immediate aftermath of the complete cancellation of the college basketball season. Since then, less than 24 hours later, virtually all high school basketball has been canceled and recruiting has been banned. Miller…
The last sporting event left standing has been postponed. The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced on Friday that the 2020 boys basketball tournament has been postponed due to the COVID-19 virus. “So sad for these boys,” the parent of one player in the tournament told The Daily Hoosier. “Heads were hanging.” Indiana signees Anthony Leal and Trey Galloway, along with commit Khristian Lander and other recruiting targets will now wait to see if the tournament can be resumed at a later time. “The association will continue to evaluate the utility of continuing the boys basketball tournament at a later…
