March 20, 1987 — Cincinnati, Ohio Bob Knight and Mike Krzyzewski go back a long way. In 1966 Krzyzewski joined Knight’s Army program as a guard where he played for three years and averaged 6.2 points per game. Krzyzewski joined Knight on the IU staff for a memorable 1974-75 season before returning to Army to lead that program until 1980. When Krzyzewski took over at Duke in 1980, it took him a few years to get things going. But after reaching the national title game in 1986, the Duke head coach had started to establish the Blue Devils on the…

Scott Dolson knows what peak IU basketball looks like. In fact, the new Indiana Director of Athletics’ first impressions of the program as a young boy came at a time when the Hoosiers were flirting with, and then finding perfection. “Growing up in northern Indiana, I was eight years old when the undefeated 1975 IU men’s basketball team lost to Kentucky in the Elite 8. I remember being absolutely crushed after that loss, Dolson told the media during an audio conference on Thursday morning. “The following year of course IU had the perfect season going undefeated and winning the 1976…
March 19, 2016 — Des Moines, Iowa One of the great series in college basketball has gone dormant, but the Hoosiers can claim the last victory. Early in the 2015-16 season, even making the NCAA Tournament at all seemed like a stretch for Indiana. The Hoosiers got off to a 5-3 start that included a poor showing at the Maui Invitational and a blowout loss at Duke. But by the time March rolled around, Indiana had won the Big Ten outright led by senior point guard Yogi Ferrell. The sluggish start to the season contributed to the Hoosiers only receiving…
Plucking a respected strength coach from the NFL ranks apparently didn’t come cheap for Indiana. And it is clear that head coach Tom Allen would like to maintain the momentum established in his program by the outgoing staff. Nicole Auerbach of the Athletic reported that new Indiana senior assistant athletic director for football performance Aaron Wellman is going to make $700,000 per year. While that figure has not been disclosed by IU, if accurate it could make Wellman the third highest strength coach in all of college football, behind only behind only Ohio State’s Mickey Marotti ($801,150) and Iowa’s Chris…

The return of Bob Knight to an Indiana basketball game was driven by the former players. Randy Wittman, Quinn Buckner, Mike Woodson and Pat Knight all made that perfectly clear in their comments after the memorable moment last month in Bloomington, Ind. “I think the fact that we had, this was organized by players as a rule, and that was one of the big things we wanted to make sure we did,” Buckner said after the halftime ceremony in honor of Knight at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. By the players and for the players. That’s how it should have been,…
March 18, 1953 — Kansas City, Mo. Playing with two sophomores and three juniors in the starting lineup, the 1952-53 Hoosiers were ahead of schedule. Led by All-Americans Don Schlundt and Bobby Leonard, Indiana tore through the Big Ten’s first ever 18-game schedule with a 17-1 mark. IU Head Coach Branch McCracken’s fast pace led to the first instance of IU going over the 100 point mark in program history with a win over Butler. The Hoosiers repeated the feat with a 113-78 trouncing of Purdue, marking the first 100 point game in Big Ten history. The Hoosiers won the…
The Jordan Howard and Nate Sudfeld reunion in Philadelphia was a brief one. On the same day that Sudfeld signed a new deal to remain with the Eagles, it was reported that his former IU teammate Howard is moving on. A former first team All-Big Ten running back for Indiana, Howard’s Eagles career is over after just nine games. The four year pro agreed Tuesday to terms of a two-year contract with the Miami Dolphins worth more than $10 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Howard will be welcomed with open arms in Miami. The Dolphins ranked last in the…
