We’ve seen this story before.  Indiana is 3-1 to open the 2019 season, but the Big Ten always separates pretenders from contenders.  The Hoosiers found that out in resounding fashion against Ohio State two weeks ago. After a brief respite, Indiana returns to conference play against one of the top powers of the league. IU has kept things close against Michigan State in each of the last two years and beat the Spartans in 2016. But in their first true road test of the season, the Hoosiers will have to be at their very best to pull off what would…

With just four scholarship guards on the 2019-20 roster, IU basketball head coach Archie Miller wants to get this just right. The third year leader of the Hoosier program saw what happened to his team last year when starting point guard Rob Phinisee missed time with a concussion and struggled to return to his former self even when resuming play. The disastrous 12 losses in 13 games stretch began soon after Phinisee suffered a concussion, and the Lafayette native’s absence and recovery seemed to play a large role. “You saw our team last year at times when Rob was playing…

Back in May, Indiana head coach Archie Miller spoke about Butler graduate transfer Joey Brunk bringing a personality, passion and an energy level to the IU program. Those intangibles matter to Miller as the IU roster continues to transform from the Tom Crean era. Something else that the former North Carolina State player places a high value is his own point guard position.  Miller has often referred to the point guard as an extension of the coaching staff, saying this earlier in the week at the IU basketball media day: “As the head coach, I look at our point guards…

While the game time label remains for Saturday’s contest against Michigan State at East Lansing, the narrative is at least changing somewhat. IU head coach Tom Allen acknowledged on Thursday that Penix did throw during practice this week, which actually revealed, or at least confirmed two things. Penix did not throw the football at all during pre-game warmups last weekend against UConn.  Things are progressing. Second, Allen’s acknowledgment about Penix throwing the football seems to…

Indiana head football coach Tom Allen might have put it best this spring when talking about the importance of verbal leadership on his team. “You imagine a coach not saying a whole lot to the team,” Allen said after a spring practice.  “He may be doing everything right but if he doesn’t ever speak, he’s not going to influence anybody around him, and leadership is influence.” Allen has had to tackle the challenge of quiet by nature quarterbacks, and IU head basketball coach Archie Miller has been dealing with a roster full of guys that are reluctant to speak up.…
