A somewhat surprising streak has come to an end. After nearly 30 years, a former Indiana University basketball player is active on a NBA Finals roster. While OG Anunoby was a key part of the 2018-19 Toronto Raptors’ season, his ability to reach active status in these 2019 Finals had been uncertain until today. The former Hoosier star underwent an emergency appendectomy in April and has missed Toronto’s entire playoff run.  It was revealed last week that Anunoby’s appendix had ruptured and he suffered infection complications after the surgery. The 6-foot-8 forward appeared in 67 games and started six times…

A recurring theme in Louisville ultimately knocked Indiana out of the NCAA baseball tournament. The Hoosiers fell to the host Cardinals on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 9-7, and once again, it was a rough outing from a normally reliable starter that did in IU. Tanner Gordon was tagged early for five hits and six runs (five earned), and the Hoosiers were never able to recover.  Gordon was pulled with one out in the third after a Cardinal homer put the hosts up 6-0. Trailing 7-0 in the sixth, IU did the one thing that they managed to…

It is nearly impossible to take a stroll through Indiana University’s Bloomington campus and not fall in love all over again. From the Sample Gates to the majestic limestone buildings, the school’s flagship campus is routinely included in just about any mention of the most beautiful in the country. There is no doubt that IU’s gem tucked away in Dunn’s Woods is a treasure for both students and alums alike. But have you ever considered the cost?  And specifically, is there a cost to the IU Athletics’ programs? To that latter question, the answer is clearly yes. Consider this from…

Indiana will have another familiar name returning on its 2019-20 roster. A source tells The Daily Hoosier that Vijay Blackmon will be with the Indiana program for the upcoming season.  We are still working to confirm his precise status with next year’s team (i.e. walk-on or scholarship).  He will be a senior on the roster. Blackmon had previously entered his name in the transfer portal to evaluate other options. A 2019 Academic All-Big Ten guard, Blackmon appeared in seven games during the 2018-19 season, scoring seven points in 12 minutes of action.  Five of his points came in the season…

The Hoosiers live to fight another day. After three consecutive postseason games where IU’s sluggers seemingly vanished, the big bats came alive on Saturday against Illinois-Chicago in a NCAA Tournament elimination game at the Louisville Regional. Indiana (37-22) defeated the Flames by a final score of 9-5 at Jim Patterson Stadium, and it was the return of the long ball that made the difference in this one. Indiana’s Drew Ashley, Cole Barr and Matt Lloyd all homered on the day for the Hoosiers.  Barr and Lloyd continued their ongoing seesaw battle for the team lead in home runs, with both…

In many ways, Jerome Hunter is the forgotten man. Forgotten that he was the second highest rated recruit — a top 60 recruit — in a class of 2018 group for IU that was ranked in the top 10 nationally. Forgotten that he was expected to be one of the better shooters on a team that couldn’t knock down shots. Forgotten that he was emerging last fall and on track to play a big role as a freshman. “You bring in a very talented guy and he wasn’t able to impact our team past basically October and he was really…

A familiar name to the Bloomington area will be joining the IU basketball team for the 2019-20 season. Jon Blau of the Bloomington Herald-Times reported via Twitter that former Edgewood High School star Cooper Bybee will be a walk-on at IU. https://twitter.com/Jon_Blau/status/1134292507985088513 The 6-foot-1, 190 pound guard played the last two seasons at Olney Central College in Olney, Illinois. Bybee averaged 7.1 points per game as a sophomore at Olney, playing 13.8 minutes per contest.  He shot 46% from the field overall and 41.9% from long range. Hailing from neighboring Ellettsville, Bybee was the fifth ever player at Edgewood to…

The postseason hasn’t been kind to Indiana baseball. The Hoosiers rallied after falling behind 7-2 against Illinois State but ultimately came up short on Friday afternoon in Louisville. The Redbirds jumped on IU starter Pauly Milto early and often to build their early lead.  The usually reliable senior right-hander gave up 14 hits and 7 earned runs in 5.1 innings. The Hoosiers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the 7th to tie things up, but a quick one run response by Illinois State in the top of the eighth was the difference as the Redbirds claimed an 8-7…

Few Indiana fans knew the name Matt Cross before he was offered a scholarship in late April after a breakout performance at the Nike EYBL in Atlanta. Cross’ 22 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game opening AAU weekend opened a lot of eyes, with at least 10 new offers coming his way in the last month. The Beverly, Massachusetts native put an exclamation point on that Atlanta session with a 29 point, 8 rebound, 6 assist and 3 steal performance in front of the IU coaches — and that Hoosier offer soon followed. While the IU…
