If the IU women’s basketball team was nervous about their likely win-and-you-are-in the NCAA Tournament scenario, they didn’t show it. The Hoosiers (20-11) came out blazing in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis and never looked back against Minnesota. In a game that was widely viewed as the final piece of IU’s NCAA resume, Indiana defeated the Gophers 66-58 on Thursday night and will face Iowa in the quarterfinals on Friday at 6:30 p.m. eastern. The Hoosiers started the game hot from the field and jumped out to a 20-10 first quarter lead.  By halftime Ali…

Indiana head football coach Tom Allen and his coaching staff have carried their in-state recruiting momentum into the class of 2020. Carmel High School linebacker Ty Wise announced via Twitter that he has committed to IU, becoming the first commit in the Hoosiers’ 2020 class. https://twitter.com/Tywise2020/status/1103660873833504768 Being the first in the class seems appropriate, as Indiana was the first Division One school to offer Wise. The 6-foot-2, 210 pound Wise had also received offers from several MAC conference schools including Ball State.  Multiple other Big Ten schools were also showing interest. As a junior in 2018, Wise totaled 56 solo…

This was supposed to be the easier part of the schedule, but the reality in the Big Ten in 2019 is this:  There is no easy part of the schedule. Illinois and Sunday’s opponent Rutgers were near consensus picks to be the bottom two teams in the Big Ten.  While they are in fact near the bottom, both have managed impressive midseason turnarounds that have Indiana’s easy landing to close out league play looking a bit uncertain. Step one is Illinois, a team that has won six of their last ten, including just one home loss in that span.  The…

You were probably skeptical at the time he said it, but now it seems clear.  Something changed after that forgettable game in Minnesota. Indiana head coach Archie Miller promised “drastic changes” coming out of that blowout loss to the Gophers, and while a couple more losses followed, few would argue against the notion that the Hoosiers have been a different team in the ensuing games. What has been the secret?  Better effort?  Yes.  Better togetherness on defense?  Yes. But it was something that Miller said on Wednesday at a media availability in advance of Thursday’s game at Illinois that stood…

The 2019 Big Ten Tournament is going to be critical for Indiana this year. With the Hoosiers squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble, losing their first game next week in Chicago seems like a formula for the NIT. Of course they could just win the whole thing and erase all doubt.  But you know better than to expect that. BTN released scenarios on Tuesday of the possible seeds for IU and other teams. The top four teams get a double bye and do not begin play until Friday.  The bottom four teams begin play on Wednesday.  Everyone else starts on…

With a 15-14 overall record and 6-12 mark in Big Ten play, it would be completely reasonable if you had long ago accepted the idea that Indiana was out of the running for the NCAA Tournament. Reasonable…..but wrong. Because here is something else that you need to accept — when you (1) play one of the most difficult schedules in the country, (2) compile an impressive list of quality wins, (3) incur no bad losses, and (4) endure and overcome a rash of injuries — you are telling people that you are in reality a pretty good team. And that…

Three former Indiana football stars participated in the NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis over the last few days. Below is a summary of their performance at the annual event. The 2019 NFL Draft begins on April 25 in Nashville, Tennessee. https://twitter.com/IndianaFootball/status/1102684870717915136 DAN GODSIL Godsil was a four year long snapper and three year short snapper for the Hoosiers.  He has a reasonable opportunity to be a late round selection but in any event has a good shot at being invited to a camp and making a roster. He was the lone long snapper invited to the event, and his vertical…
