It’s Indiana week for Illinois. Through the years, that has meant laughable hysterics coming out of the Illinois program.  From Lou Henson calling Bob Knight a “classic bully” to Bruce Weber fostering venomous hatred towards an 18 year old named Eric Gordon, the Illini are always good for a chuckle. And why shouldn’t their beat reporters join in on the fun? This is Illinois (4-9) basketball after all.  You know, the same Illinois that is coming off a home loss to Florida Atlantic, if you are keeping score at home.  The same program that is coming off a 14-18 overall…

When elite Indiana University athletics programs come to mind, the IU men’s soccer and basketball programs are likely the first that most people think of.  And that’s for good reason, as those programs have collectively produced 13 team national titles. The IU men’s swimming and diving program takes a backseat to no one with 6 team national titles of its own.  Currently ranked No. 2 in the country, the 2018-19 Hoosiers should threaten in March for the long awaited 7th crown. The 6 national titles came consecutively from 1968 through 1973.  The first of IU’s 26 Big Ten titles came…

We should have known better. Last month, when Indiana football head coach Tom Allen addressed the media after a season ending loss to Purdue, he said this in response to a question about potentially giving up the reins as the defensive coordinator — “That’s definitely something I’ve been thinking about because of all the responsibilities that fall into this position,’’ Allen said. “Now that I’ve done it for a couple years, I feel like I understand the time demands. There’s no question about it, as I’ve talked about, even last year saying there’s going to come a time when I…

Kane Wommack has quickly ascended the IU coaching ranks. Back in January, the Springfield, Missouri native was hired by head coach Tom Allen as the so-called 10th assistant.  The opening was created by an NCAA rule change that went into effect that same month. Wommack coached the IU linebackers in 2018, but he has a history as a defensive coordinator, and a history with Allen as well.  Prior to joining the Hoosiers, the Southern Mississippi graduate was the defensive coordinator at South Alabama, and held the same role before that at Eastern Illinois. During Wommack’s two seasons in Mobile, South…

The regular season of one of the more anticipated Indiana basketball campaigns in recent memory is nearly half over.  So too then is the final college basketball season of Juwan Morgan and most likely the IU career of Romeo Langford. Enjoy this folks. The good news?  This 2018-19 IU basketball season has been enjoyable.  Especially if you like close games. And the bottom line?  Despite not being elite, the Hoosiers look like a NCAA Tournament team once again.  Absent from the event since their 2016 Sweet Sixteen loss to North Carolina, a return to the Big Dance would be a welcome…

The college basketball coaches have been more difficult to convince. After returning to the AP Poll a few weeks ago for the first time in nearly two years, the IU men’s basketball program has now also returned to the USA Today Coaches Poll. Indiana is just testing the waters this week, making its debut at No. 25.  With no games until January, IU should be able to hang on to their newfound tenuous spot in the poll for now.  Staying there once Big Ten play resumes will be more challenging. Indiana is one of seven Big Ten teams ranked in…
