It is becoming more and more difficult to wrap your mind around this season and what has transpired since a 12-2 start that had Indiana firmly in the top 25 nationally. That seems like a distant memory as the Hoosiers dropped their ninth game in ten tries against Ohio State on Sunday afternoon. This one particularly stings, as for the first time this year the NCAA Tournament now seems out of reach. Of course a late season run could salvage a spot in the big dance, but that seems like an impossibility from where things stand right now. Indiana (13-11,…
It is as cliche as it gets, but Sunday afternoon’s tilt against the Ohio State Buckeyes certainly seems like a must win game for Indiana. It’s a must win in the sense that there may not be room for the likes of both Ohio State and Indiana, and their similar resumes, in the NCAA tournament. In that vein, it would especially problematic for the Hoosiers if Ohio State ends up holding a road win in Bloomington. It’s a must win also because there isn’t a game in the next six contests that Indiana has a better chance on paper to…
Yes, that is an asterisk. We will come back to the asterisk. We probably don’t even need to tell you about the asterisk. But let’s start with the good stuff. There have been times in the less than stellar history of this Indiana University football program where things seemed to be building towards something special. Kevin Wilson had it going on. It certainly felt like Terry Hoeppner was headed in that direction. Bill Mallory had a level of sustained success that hasn’t been seen for more than 30 years before or after, and in 1967 John Pont pulled together a…
It stopped me in my tracks when he said it. No, he didn’t mean it the way it sounds, but to even find those words tells you something about where Archie Miller is with this Indiana basketball team right now. This is what the second year head coach said after the Thursday night loss to Iowa, his team’s eighth in nine games — “But I wasn’t terribly disappointed in our team tonight.” Not terribly disappointed? After a loss to Iowa? In Bloomington? Right or wrong, some of us have been around long enough to be startled by that remark, however…
Well, that didn’t take long. After an inspirational, seemingly season-changing win at Michigan State on Saturday, there is a new reality in Bloomington. It’s the same as the old reality. And it isn’t a pleasant one. It appears that there will be no late season dramatic turnaround as Indiana lost their third straight game on their home floor. And there is no way to spin this fact — IU has now lost eight of their last nine games. With a home loss to Iowa on Thursday night, IU’s NCAA Tournament hopes are now firmly on the bubble the rest of…
