D.J. Carton has us stumped.  After narrowing down his list to a final three on Sunday evening, he is reportedly planning to announce a commitment in the next couple weeks.  Instinctively, such an abbreviated timeline would suggest that he has his mind pretty much made up, right?  Why put yourself on that schedule if you are truly still undecided?  Of course he is not bound to commit soon if he needs more time. But then it came out that he was planning to take an official visit to Ohio State.  That visit started today.  If he had truly decided or…

The Indiana University men’s basketball program has a storied past, with five national championships and 22 Big Ten titles.  Along the way of course, a great number of individuals have contributed to that run of success. Through the years the Hoosiers have had more than 60 individual All-American seasons and 16 Big Ten player of the year seasons.  So how then do you distill that down to the five best individual seasons of all-time?  It wasn’t easy. Of course, with the game changing dramatically over the course of more than 100 years, any analysis such as this runs the risk…

Bettendorf Iowa’s D.J. Carton has narrowed his list down to three teams.  The class of 2019 five-star point guard made the announcement on Sunday evening via Twitter: https://twitter.com/DJCarton/status/1016080169952595968 The key word from his tweet appears to be “final.”  After rumors and speculation about other programs entering the mix such as Duke, North Carolina and Kansas, it appears that Carton has eliminated new suitors and will focus on his final three teams: Indiana, Michigan and Ohio State. Carton had previously released a top six in May that also included Marquette, Xavier, and Iowa.  Today’s announcement is major disappointment to Iowa fans…

This is the second in a five-part series on the historic home courts of the Indiana University basketball program.  Today we take a look at the second home of the Hoosiers — the Men’s Gymnasium on 7th Street. A HYSTERIA GROWS By 1915, the popularity of college athletics was accelerating rapidly, and it didn’t take long for the relatively new original Assembly Hall to be viewed as inadequate.  With the student body petitioning for a new facility, IU began exploring alternatives and ultimately landed on a plan to construct a new state-of-the-art facility. An August 15, 1915 Sunday Indianapolis Star headline…

Rivals has updated its class of 2020 Top 125, with a number of Indiana targets included in the list. This may be a class where Indiana ends up focusing a bit more outside of the Hoosier state. The conventional wisdom right now is that the class of 2020 is not as elite in-state as the classes of 2019 and 2021.  To that end, there may not end up being any in-state five star players.  Nevertheless, there are two Indiana players in the Rivals rankings — Anthony Leal and Trey Galloway.  Leal entered the rankings for the first time after an…

As we previously reported, six former Indiana University men’s basketball players are participating in the NBA Summer League.  Since that report, Thomas Bryant has been waived by the Lakers and picked up by the Wizards.  He will now play for the Wizards in the Summer League. Robert Johnson (Atlanta) and Christian Watford (Memphis) have already participated in summer action in Salt Lake City earlier this week. Johnson appeared in two games in Salt Lake City, averaging 13 minutes, 3.5 points, and 1.5 rebounds on 30% shooting from the field.  Watford did not appear in Memphis’ games in Salt Lake City.…

If you follow Indiana’s class of 2019 college basketball recruiting targets closely like we do, you’ve noticed some positive noise this week around Keion Brooks, Jr. as it relates to Indiana.  That’s the good news. First, the Rivals national team of Eric Bossi, Corey Evans, Dan McDonald, and Krysten Peek made predictions earlier this week on a number of 2019 prospects, including Brooks.  Bossi, Evans and Peek all see Brooks landing in Bloomington.  McDonald gives the edge to Michigan State. We were pleasantly surprised to see a majority thinking IU was in the lead.  That being said, they are just predictions in…

It was no secret.  Despite a thunderous start, Tom Crean lost his way recruiting within the borders of Indiana. After securing the likes of Jordan Hulls, Cody Zeller, Yogi Ferrell and others, things went south in-state.  If Crean had continued to win at a high level, it would not have mattered.  But when you are missing on Gary Harris, Zak Irvin, Caleb Swanigan, Trey Lyles and Kyle Guy — and you are missing the NCAA Tournament — well, you know what happened. We’ve said it before, and at this point there is really no denying it.  As the head coach…
