The late former NFL head coach Dennis Green once famously said, repeatedly, “they are who we thought they were” after a tough loss. While they had a choppy start to the season, Michigan State has the most returning starters in the country coming off a 10-3 season, have a great head coach in Mark Dantonio, and had two weeks to prepare for Indiana.  The Spartans are who we thought they were — a tough, physical and talented football team that frankly was the better squad on Saturday night. But after another disappointing loss against a Big Ten East power, the…

Indiana had grown accustomed to falling behind early.  The Hoosiers trailed in the first quarter of each of their first three games — and they won all of them. On Saturday night, the deficit grew larger than it had in those early games, and the opponent was better than any of the previous three.  The realities of the Big Ten East have arrived. The Indiana offense struggled throughout the game against Michigan State, and their early shortcomings put the Hoosiers in quick hole. After the IU offense produced a very quick three and out running up tempo offense on their…

There is no way around it — this could be a big moment in the history of the Indiana University football program. Or it could just be a continuation of the same story that has been playing out in Bloomington for decades.  As we saw after an IU win over Michigan State in 2016, one game does not necessarily change the course of history. But since day one, breaking through has been the motto under Tom Allen.  If it is ever truly going to happen at Indiana, it is going to start with a game just like Saturday night against…

Most high level college basketball recruitments seem to have a certain level of mystery and intrigue, but class of 2019 guard Jahmius Ramsey’s has to be near the top in that regard.  Over the summer he had adamantly indicated that he was waiting for the spring to commit, without providing much in the way of his thought process behind that.  Fair enough. Several weeks ago Ramsey released a  “remaining 10 list” that seemed to suggest that he was narrowing his potential landing spots and perhaps accelerating the process.  Not much later, word came of five official visits, including a Hoosier…

Yes, we are already talking about official visits and the class of 2020.  With the recent NCAA rule changes, class of 2020 prospects are now allowed to take official visits during their junior years and again during their senior years. First up at Indiana from the class of 2020 — none other than the first player the Hoosiers offered in the class — Ethan Morton.  Below is a story we wrote on Morton back in April when Indiana offered him. The key updates on the Pennsylvania native since we wrote that article are: This past AAU season, he played a year…

Big Ten football is here, and Indiana will kick things off on Saturday night with a prime time marquee match-up against one of the conference elites, Michigan State.  The Spartans are 1-1 on the young season and are coming off a bye week. Michigan State started the season with a too-close-for-comfort home win over Utah State (38-31), and then lost a heartbreaker on the road to Arizona State (13-16).  As one of the more experienced teams in the country, the choppy start has been somewhat of a disappointment for MSU and their fans. Today we take a look at what…

Relatively speaking, it isn’t all that often that a true freshman sees the field for significant playing time at the highest levels of college football.  Of course it happens, but for an 18 year old kid just out of high school to compete with mostly 20 to 22 year old men, the talent level has to be pretty high. Perhaps it is in part out of necessity that no less than 12 true freshmen have become regulars through the first three weeks of Indiana’s 2018 season. IU is the 19th youngest team in the country and the fourth youngest in…
