As a four year starter at quarterback, Antwaan Randle El might have been able to make this list based on his accomplishments passing the ball alone. The Illinois native is the program’s 2nd all-time leading passer with 7,469 yards, and his 42 career passing touchdowns land him at 4th all-time. But it’s only when you add in what Randle El did with his legs that you fully appreciate his greatness as a Hoosier.  He’s also the program’s 2nd all-time leading rusher with 3,895 yards.  Randle El actually led the team in rushing in 1998 and 2000, and that 2000 rushing…

It’s a good thing we didn’t publish this yesterday.  Five days before the season kicks off — and it would have been old news. Last week, a months long quarterback competition came to an end when Peyton Ramsey was announced as the starter.  Today, it was announced that graduate transfer Brandon Dawkins has left the IU football program.  It was also announced that true freshman and Indiana Mr. Football Reese Taylor would be moving back to the quarterback position after a brief stint at cornerback and receiver. There’s still a few more days until Saturday’s opener at Florida International.  Stay…

Well that didn’t last long. Graduate transfer quarterback Brandon Dawkins has left the Indiana football program. IU head coach Tom Allen addressed the media on that and many other topics on Monday morning in Bloomington. “We wish him nothing but the very best. Fine young man. Very excited, though, about the two guys I consider our top two QBs, Peyton Ramsey and Michael Penix,” Allen told reporters. Allen indicated that Dawkins met with him on Sunday, and told him he “wanted to sort some things out,” and go in a different direction. https://www.facebook.com/IndianaFootball/videos/233540430665339/ Dawkins reportedly struggled throughout fall camp to accurately…

The debate was wide open for No.’s 6-10 on our list.  Strong arguments could have been made for several former Hoosier stars that didn’t make the cut.  We’d argue that now, in the final five, the only question is with the order.  These final five are in our opinion the undeniable time-tested legends of IU football. A recurring theme with our all-time Hoosier football top ten has been that of the outlier.  Richard Corbett “Corby” Davis stands alone as the only IU football player to be selected as the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.  For a while it…

Despite key losses at every level of the IU defense, the clear strength in 2018 seems to be the defensive backfield.  A core of strong veterans return and they are bolstered by a group of promising young players. To be sure IU lost three long-time high-caliber players from its defensive backfield.  All three will be difficult to replace.  But the Hoosiers will be able to line up with all third year or more players likely starting, and all of these guys will have extensive experience. Beyond the experienced players, the coaches believe that there is no a major drop-off in…

Born 10 weeks premature, the odds were stacked against Tevin Coleman from day one.  Perseverance would be a trait that would come in handy during his college football career. Despite only playing the equivalent of two full seasons, Coleman is the program’s 5th all-time leading rusher with 3,219 yards.  Truly an outlier, he can claim something unique from all of the other Hoosiers on the all-time top ten list, with a gaudy career average of more than 7 yards per rushing attempt. It all came together for the Illinois native in a magical 2014 season when Coleman became the program’s third…

At the conclusion of the 2017 season, when we first started to look forward and think about the running backs on the 2018 roster, one word came to mind — loaded.  Perhaps too loaded.  There didn’t appear to be enough snaps to keep everyone happy. With 14 offensive linemen returning and a roster full of experienced backs, IU appeared destined to improve significantly on their 105th ranked rushing attack from the year prior. And then the attrition started.  And even here in late August, it hasn’t stopped. But behind an offensive line that appears to be the strength of the…

There is probably no more difficult position to compare across more than 125 years of a football program than quarterback.  The style of the game has changed dramatically through the years, and making comparisons based on raw statistics can of course be misleading. There are different styles of quarterback at the college football level as well.  The dual-threat and the pro-styles are difficult to compare in and of themselves.  As you might have imagined, there will be a dual-threat quarterback later in this list. For our money, the best pro-style quarterback in IU history is none other than Nate Sudfeld. …
