A movement is afoot to rename the portion of 17th Street that passes just south of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall and Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. Former IU football player, coach and administrator Harold Mauro has started a petition at Change.org to rename that section of the street “Bob Knight Way.” Here is what Mauro says in the petition: We ask that Indiana University with the cooperation of the City of Bloomington rename 17th street from Fee Lane to Dunn Street “Bob Knight Way”. Bob Knight stood for excellence in his 29 years of coaching the Indiana Hoosiers. His teams won…

Two former Hoosiers were waived by the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday. Undrafted free agents Aaron Casey and Andre Carter were both let go, the NFL franchise reported. Casey was widely thought to have a chance to make the Bengals but will now look to land on a practice squad. Carter originally signed after the April draft with Jacksonville.  He was waived by that club and then later joined the Bengals for a brief stint. Earlier in the week, the New York Giants waived former IU defensive end Ryder Anderson.  He cleared waivers and was placed on injured reserve (hamstring). Speaking…

On Thursday Cincinnati named Indiana transfer Brendan Sorsby as the Bearcats’ starting quarterback for their Aug. 31 season opener. “He has worked hard to learn the offense, and he’s made a lot of plays,” Cincinnati coach Scott Satterfield said of Sorsby. “I think he has earned the respect of his teammates, which is huge. There are so many little things that go into being the starter, and I think Brendan has handled himself well. “He has a quiet confidence about himself but he shows humility too, which I like in a quarterback.” Sorsby played two seasons with IU, starting seven…

The playing surfaces at Indiana’s top venues could be taking on a new look in the near future. Via release, IU Athletics says they have created a first-of-its kind branding opportunity available on the playing surfaces of both Memorial Stadium and Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. In Memorial Stadium, potential brand partners can now consider the chance to become the field level sponsor with their logo displayed on each side of the field at the 25-yard line. Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, meanwhile, can now feature a single marketing partner’s logo on each side of the court.  The Daily Hoosier inquired whether…

When Indiana coach Mike Woodson took the microphone for Senior Day festivities in March and addressed the crowd, he gave thanks to those who had contributed to the program’s name, image and likeness (NIL) endeavors, including even one individual by name. “I’d like to thank (Cook Group President) Pete Yonkman of Hoosiers for Good, and all the NIL participants who’ve given money to keep our program where it should be,” Woodson said. And in the weeks that followed, the Hoosiers signed one of the top transfer portal classes in the nation, including Arizona center Oumar Ballo, Washington State guard Myles…

As we’ve shared in recent days, preseason computer projections haven’t been friendly to IU football. ESPN’s SP+ and FPI both say the Hoosiers are the worst team in the 18-team Big Ten Conference as we get set to kick off the 2024 campaign. For new head coach Curt Cignetti, that’s just fine.  He’s seen less than flattering preseason predictions during his head coaching career. “The two times we were picked next to last, in 2022, we won the conference championship, and in 2017 we inherited an 8-45 team and won eight in a row and played JMU the last game…

Donaven McCulley was one of Curt Cignetti’s biggest wins in the transfer portal this offseason. After a breakout junior season at wide receiver, just his second year playing that position, McCulley decided to evaluate his alternatives via the portal when Tom Allen was fired. And McCulley had plenty of options. Florida State, Texas A&M, Penn State, Kentucky, Michigan, N.C. State, South Carolina, Nebraska, Mississippi State and UCLA were among the Indianapolis product’s offers after his 48 catch, 644 yard and six touchdown 2023 season. The writing appeared to be on the wall. Even Cignetti was surprised when McCulley informed the…
