Indiana opened its season with the program’s third worst home loss in the history of Assembly Hall.  After that 90-69 loss to Indiana State the Hoosiers just needed a win.  In a game against Howard, who is one of the lower rated teams in the country, Indiana did in fact get that win, 86-77.  It wasn’t always pretty and this team has a long way to go, but this was, if nothing more, a step in the right direction. Overall – C+  The bottom line here is that Howard, at least on paper, is not a team that should be…

Indiana has seen its share of recruits that came in underrated and left as stars.  Victor Oladipo, anyone?  While we aren’t going to start making Oladipo comparisons, we will say that Al Durham, Jr. at least has the look of someone that was flying a bit under the radar.  The final rankings for the class of 2017 for Durham, Jr. by 247Sports.com, ESPN.com, Rivals.com and Scout.com were as follows: 247Sports Three stars, No. 166 nationally ESPN Four stars, unranked in top 100 Rivals Three stars, unranked in top 150 Scout Three stars, unranked in top 100 Through 2 games the…

As you’ve probably heard by now, IU alum Joe Buck did an hour long interview with former IU coach Bob Knight on the Audience Network.  You must be a Direct TV subscriber to watch the full interview.  At the end we tell you how to watch the full interview for free.  It is must see for any IU basketball fan, irrespective of your opinion of the legendary coach.  Here are some of the highlights that we noted: First, we’ve heard various reports that Coach Knight was having health issues.  Nothing was apparent in the interview.  His mind seemed as quick…

The Indiana breakthrough didn’t happen in 2017, but Indiana still has much to play for.  In fact, if Indiana can win its final 2 games it will accomplish something that it has only achieved 1 other time in its history — play in 3 straight bowl games.  The 1986 to 1988 Hoosiers under Bill Mallory were the only others to do it.  Those Hoosier teams had what was likely the greatest run of sustained success in the program’s history.  So if these Hoosiers can achieve something that has only been done 1 other time, and that was 30 years ago,…

For Indiana fans, any loss at Assembly Hall stings.  Then there are 21 point home losses to Missouri Valley Conference teams.  Not being accustomed to home losses by such large margins, we wondered, what are the 10 worst home losses by the Hoosiers since Assembly Hall was opened in 1971.  It is a list that doesn’t really take long to compile — Indiana has gone entire seasons without losing at home, including 1973, 1975, 1976, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2007, and 2016 — which further highlights the significance of the Indiana State debacle.  So here is the list.  We suggest…

Yesterday we wrote about the last 6 games in the Indiana vs. Indiana State series, describing how each of those games had been tightly contested.  If we would have told you that this year’s matchup would break that trend and result in a blowout, virtually everyone would have predicted an IU victory.  Needless to say, when the prohibitive favorite gets blown out on its home floor, the report card isn’t going to be pretty.  So without further ado we present the cringe-worthy Hoosier report card for game 1, a 90-69 loss to Indiana State: Overall – F+ Ok, is there…

The Indiana University men’s basketball team begins its 118th season today against the Indiana State Sycamores at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.  Surprisingly, given their in-state proximity to one another, it will be only the 23rd all-time meeting between the programs, with the Hoosiers leading the series 17 to 5.  It may be a mistake to assume that Indiana will cruise to an easy victory on its home floor.  The Sycamores have been a thorn in the Hoosiers’ side in the more recent games in the series.  3 of the Sycamores’ 5 series wins have come in the last 6 games. …

Collin Hartman attempted to do something on Friday night against Indiana State that we believe is an Indiana Hoosier basketball first — returning to play for IU after giving a senior night speech at Assembly Hall.  Instead, he missed the game with a groin injury, thereby perfectly illustrating the dramatic twists and turns of his IU career.  And why shouldn’t he follow an unusual path — it has been that way for some time now. Collin Hartman didn’t grow up an IU fan.  He lived in football crazed Nebraska in his early years, hundreds of miles from Indiana and its…
