Indiana sixth-year senior Xavier Johnson and sophomore center Kel’el Ware are set to return to game action Wednesday at Nebraska, per a report from Jeff Goodman. Johnson missed seven straight games after aggravating a left foot injury in late November against Harvard. The Hoosiers went 5-2 without the point guard, including Big Ten wins over Maryland and Michigan. In six games prior to the injury, Johnson averaged 10.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.7 turnovers, 0.7 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game. He was shooting 48.6 percent from the field, 50 percent from 3-point range (on 1.7 attempts per game),…

In many ways, 2023 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall was the year of Mackenzie Holmes. So it was only fitting that she closed the year out with one last big game. Holmes opened the year with a strong performance. IU hosted Nebraska on New Year’s Day last season, and pulled out a tight win in overtime. The forward led the way with 22 points on an 8-for-14 line, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. From then on, in most games Indiana played this year, Holmes was the best player on the court. Her 2022-23 campaign was unlike any other in the…

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana women’s basketball rang in the new year in style. The Hoosiers never quite put the game out of reach against Illinois on New Year’s Eve, and the atmosphere grew increasingly tense in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall as the game got later. The Fighting Illini tied the game multiple times in the fourth quarter, but could never quite pull ahead, as Indiana came away with a 77-71 win on Sunday. Graduate student forward Mackenzie Holmes has had plenty of big games throughout her career. And her performance on Sunday ranked among the biggest, when Indiana (11-1, 2-0 Big…

BLOOMINGTON — The groans that filled Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, and the disgruntled looks on faces around the seating bowl, on the sideline, and on the court said it all. “Here we go again.” Indiana men’s basketball was doing it again. Several of its non-conference “buy games” this season have been tighter and more nerve-wracking than they should’ve been. Just over a week ago, the Hoosiers required a major turnaround to avert disaster against Morehead State. IU started Friday’s game against Kennesaw State looking like that wouldn’t happen, despite not having leading scorer Kel’el Ware (illness). The Hoosiers led by…

As the NBA season heads towards the new year, a few former IU players have been in the headlines for different reasons. Seven former Hoosiers are on NBA rosters this season. Only three are currently in significant roles of any sort right now, though. And Victor Oladipo has yet to suit up for the Houston Rockets this season as he recovers from knee surgery, and his timetable for returning is unknown. Here’s a look at how the other six players have fared so far this year. OG Anunoby Anunoby came into this season with high expectations coming off the best…

It hasn’t been a smooth ride for Indiana women’s basketball through the non-conference schedule. IU is ranked No. 16 in the AP Poll and owns a 10-1 overall record, with a 1-0 mark in the Big Ten as the team heads into the bulk of conference play. The Hoosiers host Illinois (6-5, 0-1) Sunday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall at 12:30 p.m. ET on BTN. But the journey to this point has been a little bumpy. Last season, Indiana didn’t suffer its first loss of the season until December 29, the first game of the main Big Ten slate at…

Indiana football has been very active in the transfer portal this offseason under new head coach Curt Cignetti. But the flurry of incoming and outgoing transfers isn’t anything new for the Hoosiers. They saw a bevy of players leave last offseason and brought in a large number of players that saw real playing time this year. Not all of the players who left saw significant game action this year. But here’s a look at several of the notable players who transferred from IU last year and how they performed at their new schools this season. Dasan McCullough McCullough’s numbers dropped…

BLOOMINGTON — Coming into this season, Sara Scalia was looking to develop consistency. She was capable of catching fire at any given moment last season, but when she wasn’t hitting shots early, she’d sometimes have trouble staying engaged on the court. Scalia has improved in that sense this season, and it’s led to even bigger games. And on Friday night against Bowling Green, the fifth-year senior enjoyed her best performance in an IU uniform. She scored 32 points and led the Hoosiers to dominant 84-35 win over Bowling Green at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. I think a big thing is…

BLOOMINGTON — With the first half under-12 media timeout approaching during Indiana’s game against North Alabama, the Hoosiers executed a broken offensive possession. Trey Galloway drove to the rim and kicked it out, and the shot clock began running low. Kaleb Banks seemed unaware for a moment as he swung the ball around the 3-point line to Malik Reneau with a few seconds to spare. Reneau had to launch a deep, contested three to avoid a turnover. The forward shot 26.3 percent from 3-point range in his career entering Thursday’s game. Reneau had already made one, but on most nights,…

Curt Cignetti has yet to see Bloomington in daylight since starting as Indiana’s head football coach at the beginning of December. He’s had to grind through his first three weeks on the job, as the transfer portal officially opened just three days after he started, and National Signing Day not far behind that. Cignetti knew this period would be critical to IU’s outlook for next season, and he’s dedicated long hours to building the sort of momentum he knew the program needed. That’s meant a lot of days beginning before 5 a.m. and not returning home until 11 p.m. But…
