IU hosts Ohio State to kick off 2023. The Hoosiers have not beaten the Buckeyes since 1988 — Ohio State has won 21 consecutive games against IU. If the Hoosiers end the streak this year, it would significantly reshape the season outlooks for both teams. Opponent: Ohio State Date/Time/TV: Saturday, September 2, 3:30 p.m., CBS Location: Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Ind. 2022 record/postseason result: 11-2, 8-1 Big Ten, No. 4 seed in…
Calbert Cheaney still remembers the first time he met Mike Woodson. Going into his junior year at IU in 1991, Cheaney played in multiple international tournaments during the summer, and his body felt the impact. He was worn down physically by the time the season came around, and he struggled early on. At some point during that slump, Woodson and fellow IU men’s basketball great Scott May talked to Cheaney to help him through the tough period. Woodson, by then, was fresh off his playing career, before he began coaching. That moment stuck with Cheaney. “We had a great conversation,…

Indiana football has multiple reasons to celebrate on this July 4th. The Hoosiers picked up a commitment on Tuesday from class of 2024 edge rusher Shamar Meikle. The Hollywood, Fla. native announced his decision on social media. https://www.instagram.com/p/CuSApgzrUPG/?igshid=MTIzZWMxMTBkOA%3D%3D Meikle is big, at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds. 247Sports composite ranks him as a 3-star recruit, the No. 88 edge in the class of 2024, and No. 170 among all recruits from Florida in the class. Indiana was Meikle’s only power-five offer, but he drew extensive interest from group of five programs. His other offers included FIU, Florida Atlantic, Liberty, Kent State,…
Maya Makalusky was not always in the spotlight on the basketball court. When the guard lived in Colorado during her elementary school years, she wasn’t playing in any sort of AAU or travel league. When she was around eight years old, Makalusky started playing in a recreational league — the type of league where all players get participation trophies at the end of the season, where future Division I players can mix it up with kids who would quit basketball by the end of the year. Makalusky remembered wearing a wristband that reminded her of her defensive matchup. It was…
One of the biggest storylines of the offseason, and heading into next season, for Indiana men’s basketball is the team’s revamped roster. The Hoosiers have six new scholarship players, between transfer portal additions and freshmen. And they lost six players on the other side, notably program bedrock Trayce Jackson-Davis, key veterans Race Thompson and Miller Kopp, and freshman phenom Jalen Hood-Schifino. The roster turnover provides Mike Woodson an opportunity to change the team’s playing style, after essentially entering the IU job with a forced hand with a roster already built around Jackson-Davis. But, especially in the offseason, it creates some…
Hubert Caliste Jr. wasn’t planning to play high school football. He played while growing up, among other sports. But in middle school, he ditched the gridiron to focus on the hardwood. Caliste had fallen in love with basketball while playing AAU, and stuck with that. Caliste went on to play basketball for St. Augustine High in New Orleans as a freshman and sophomore, but the school’s football coaches continually asked if he’d join their team. He finally went out for the team as a junior last fall, and he settled in quickly. Caliste played quarterback growing up, but St. Augustine…
