Indiana baseball entered this season with modest expectations, but suddenly, the Hoosiers are on the precipice of history. The Hoosiers advanced to a regional final for the first time since 2018 with a dramatic 5-3 win over Kentucky on Friday. IU (43-18) will face the winner between UK (37-19) and West Virginia (40-19) on Sunday at 6 p.m. A win would send the Hoosiers to Super Regionals for the first time since 2013, when they went to the College World Series. A loss would set up a winner-takes-all rematch on Monday. Saturday’s showdown was not easy for Indiana. This game…

As opponents swarmed Jules LaMendola with extra defenders and different schemes to limit her, she was unfazed. She frequently encountered that last season as a senior, as teams knew how dangerous the IU commit was. When LaMendola was a junior, her Coppell (Texas) High School team had a center who went on to play in Division II, and that helped alleviate some pressure on her. But there were no detractors last year. So opponents constantly sent double-teams and triple-teams at her, and did whatever they could to stop her. “I think they would throw all five players at her if…
Tim Carpenter did not grow up an Indiana fan, but he fondly remembers watching the Hoosiers excel in 2020. Living in Dayton, Ohio, Carpenter was an Ohio State fan. But the 6-2 IU team during the COVID-affected season was a memorable team for him. And that’s largely because of quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Carpenter watched Penix play and saw a quarterback whose game resembled his own. He looked up to Penix because of that. “Just his play style, and just the person. I didn’t know him off the field, but just getting a sense of who he was off the…
Indiana baseball had a shot at a conference title. The Hoosiers entered the final series of the regular season tied with Maryland atop the Big Ten standings. Both teams had three games left — Indiana at Michigan State, and Maryland at Penn State. Maryland had the tiebreaker for the top seed in the conference tournament, but if Indiana just matched the Terrapins’ results, both would be conference champions. But the Hoosiers couldn’t take advantage of a Nittany Lions win on Friday. IU dropped two out of the three games to Michigan State, and Maryland secured the outright title. The Spartans…
Indiana football has landed a quarterback in the class of 2024. Timothy Carpenter, from Dayton, Ohio, announced his commitment to the Hoosiers on Twitter on Sunday. Carpenter is a three-star recruit in 247Sports Composite. https://twitter.com/timcarpenterqb/status/1660300633902071808 Carpenter checks in at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds. 247Sports Composite ranks him the No. 43 quarterback in the country for the class of 2024, and the No. 23 recruit from Ohio. IU offered him on May 15. Indiana was Carpenter’s lone power five offer. He was offered by several MAC schools, including Akron, Central Michigan, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Toledo, and Western Michigan. Liberty and…
Indiana softball was unable to sustain momentum from its win over Louisville. The Hoosiers lost to No. 4-seeded Tennessee, 9-1, in five innings on Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn. The Lady Volunteers won on the run rule, with an eight-run lead after the fifth inning. Momentum was a big story in this game. IU actually led 1-0 in the first inning on a home run by freshman Taryn Kern, who won Big Ten freshman of the year and player of the year. But Tennessee answered back immediately with two homers in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.…
Indiana softball played its first NCAA Tournament game in 12 years on Friday, taking on Louisville in Knoxville, Tenn. The Hoosiers are off to a good start. IU held on for a dramatic 4-3 win in the regional opener. This is Indiana’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 2006. Indiana led 4-2 heading into the seventh inning, with sophomore starting pitcher Brianna Copeland looking to throw her seventh complete game of the season. But Louisville right fielder Vanessa Miller crushed a leadoff home run to right field to make it a one-run game, and after a groundout, Copeland lost a nine-pitch…
It didn’t take long for teammates and coaches to see something different in Lenée Beaumont as a senior. The 6-foot guard was already a good player before last season, as she committed to Indiana women’s basketball last spring. She went through the offseason and entered the season with the recruiting process behind her, a weight off her shoulders. Beaumont improved her game physically heading into last season, but she made even bigger strides mentally. From the start of the season, she came in much more aggressive and assertive. That was evident as early as Benet Academy’s season-opener at La Lumiere,…
If the goal is to hit your stride, as a team, as you head towards postseason play, then IU baseball is in a good spot. The Hoosiers swept Purdue in dominating fashion over the weekend in three lopsided victories, and moved back into a tie with Maryland for first place in the Big Ten. Indiana racked up 51 runs across the three games, with a 26-11 final on Friday, a 15-3 win on Saturday, and 10-2 on Sunday. IU head coach Jeff Mercer, after Friday’s game, said he was telling the team to keep pushing despite the big lead. “You…
When Mike Woodson took over as head coach of Indiana men’s basketball in 2021, one of the biggest questions around the hire was how he would fare in recruiting. Woodson’s pure coaching acumen was evident through his long NBA career, and his dedication to the program was unquestionably strong. But there are differences between coaching in the professional ranks and the college game, the biggest of which is on the recruiting trail. Many wondered if Woodson was cut out for the constant grind that is recruiting, and if he knew what he was getting himself into in that regard. This…
