Former IU women’s basketball star Ali Patberg is adding an assistant coach title to her existing responsibilities for the Hoosiers, a source confirmed to The Daily Hoosier. The program legend joined the IU women’s basketball staff last season as team and recruitment coordinator. She’s back in the same role this year, but with the added duties that come with the additional title. Patberg is able to join the coaching staff because of the NCAA rule change allowing teams to employ up to five assistant coaches. Only three of those five are allowed to go off campus to recruit, and Patberg…

Quarterbacks: C+ This will be a theme for Indiana’s offensive grades: the unit played poorly against Ohio State and well against Indiana State. Tayven Jackson and Brendan Sorsby exemplified that. The redshirt freshmen could not get anything going against the Buckeyes, both running and passing. OSU is an obviously talented defense, and IU’s conservative game plan made it even harder for the quarterbacks to make an impact. We started to see more of what Jackson and Sorsby can do against Indiana State, as both guys played well. Neither was perfect, and a lot of FBS quarterbacks would look good against…

BLOOMINGTON — Through two games, Indiana has yet to name a starting quarterback. The plan after fall camp — as head coach Tom Allen said last week — was always for both Tayven Jackson and Brendan Sorsby to play in the first two games. Sorsby started against Ohio State last week, and Jackson started Friday against Indiana State, as IU ran away with a 41-7 victory at Memorial Stadium. Allen was not ready to declare either redshirt freshman the starter after his team’s first victory of the season. That decision, he said, will come ahead of next week’s game against…

Indiana’s quarterback competition will be the center of attention Friday night against Indiana State. The Hoosiers used both Tayven Jackson and Brendan Sorsby against Ohio State, and they’ll do the same against the Sycamores. Sorsby started last week, Jackson will start this week. Both redshirt freshmen played around the same number of snaps last week, and the distribution should be similarly even this week. It’s a period of continued evaluation as the Hoosiers look for one of the two players to pull ahead and win the starting job. So far, that hasn’t happened. “Overall, I don’t think either one of…

Former Indiana pitcher Andrew Saalfrank made his major league debut Tuesday with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The left-hander came out of the bullpen at Chase Field with two outs in the top of the sixth inning as the D-backs trailed the Colorado Rockies, 3-2. Saalfrank induced a groundout from Rockies veteran outfielder Charlie Blackmon for his first career out. He came back out in the seventh and picked up his first MLB strikeout against shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, and got his second against outfielder Nolan Jones in the eighth. In total, Saalfrank pitched 1 ⅔ clean innings with the two strikeouts. Saalfrank…

Jaylin Lucas was named an All-American last year for his kick returning prowess, but he’d never handled punts before Saturday’s game against Ohio State. The return game is an easy way for Indiana to get its dangerous sophomore the ball in space. But catching and returning punts is different than kickoffs, so Lucas had work to do in the offseason. And Saturday, he looked like he’d been returning punts his entire football career. “I was questioned last year why he didn’t return punts. And he wasn’t ready. He struggled in that area to catch the ball,” IU head coach Tom…

One week into the season, Indiana football has already learned a lot. Plenty of questions still persist after IU’s 23-3 loss to Ohio State. But the Hoosiers also learned a lot, whether good or bad, about themselves and what they need to improve going forward. IU head coach Tom Allen, co-defensive coordinator Matt Guerrieri, and offensive coordinator Walt Bell met with local media Monday for their weekly press conference. They discussed some of those things they learned, and looked ahead to Friday’s game against Indiana State. Here are some of the key things that came out of Monday’s availability. The…

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana’s defense did enough. The Hoosiers suffered a 23-3 defeat against No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday, but against one of the most talented offensive units in the nation, their defense showed real signs of improvement from last season. Indiana (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) held the Buckeyes to 380 yards of total offense; they had just two games last season with fewer yards. And the Hoosiers held only two opponents to that number last season. OSU (1-0, 1-0) scored its fewest points against Indiana since 1993. The Buckeyes have been limited to that number or fewer just three times in…

Kobee Minor had to grow up fast on the football field. The new Indiana cornerback started playing at seven years old in a local rec league, and from the beginning, he competed against nine and 10 year olds. He was naturally intimidated at first; it’s hard not to be. Kobee was the smallest and youngest on the field. His twin brother, Darryl — who transferred to IU at linebacker around the same time as Kobee — was also playing up an age group, and he talked to Kobee and reassured him. And while it wasn’t completely smooth for Kobee from…
