When Race Thompson went down with a knee injury at Iowa, he feared the worst. Based on the way it looked and felt, the senior forward thought his knee was damaged severely enough to end his season and his IU career. Indiana women’s basketball has achieved so much over the past several years. The Hoosiers reached their first-ever Sweet Sixteen in 2021, and then did it again the very next season. They got to an Elite Eight. They reached the Big Ten Tournament championship game for the second time in program history. They hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Bloomington for the first time. Head coach Teri Moren recently became the program’s all-time winningest coach. In a top-15 matchup on the road, Indiana women’s basketball hung on. The sixth-ranked Hoosiers staved off a fourth-quarter comeback by No. 13 Michigan and left Crisler Center with a 92-83 win. Indiana football appears likely to roll with youth at quarterback in 2023. Speaking to local media Sunday, head coach Tom Allen said he’s not planning to add another quarterback from the transfer portal before the Hoosiers hold spring football. In just eight days, Indiana basketball completely turned its season around. And the Hoosiers didn’t need to get Race Thompson and Xavier Johnson back to do it. Trayce Jackson-Davis has enjoyed many strong performances throughout his Indiana career. He’s put the Hoosiers on his back so many times. And he has a plethora of clutch moments on his highlight reel. His outing on Thursday against Illinois might top them all. The senior completely dominated the Fighting Illini at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois, leading the Hoosiers to a massive 80-65 win. Mackenzie Holmes is one of the most decorated players in Indiana women’s basketball history. She’s earned All-Big Ten honors in each of her three seasons in Bloomington — one All-Freshman team, one first team, and one second team. She was named an All-American honorable mention by the Associated Press in 2021 and by WBCA in 2022. After an upstart Illinois team jumped ahead in the first quarter, Indiana women’s basketball took control of the game and ran with it. The No. 6 Hoosiers pulled away with an 83-72 win Wednesday over the No. 21 Fighting Illini at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois. With this win, Indiana matched its best start to a season in program history, at 17-1. The only other IU women’s basketball team to start a season 17-1 was in 1971-72 — the program’s first season. With Race Thompson and Xavier Johnson out, Indiana’s needed a little bit more from everyone else. And during this stretch, Miller Kopp is shooting at the lowest volume of his career. He’s attempted 10 total field goals in the last four games. Even dating back to his days at Northwestern, he’s never recorded that few field-goal attempts over a four-game span.
