Indiana men’s basketball took care of business in its first of two exhibition games Saturday, pulling away quickly for a 78-42 win over Marian at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers opened the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back. Senior Race Thompson and freshman Malik Reneau both hit double-figure scoring in the first half, including three 3-pointers by Thompson. Indiana led 42-21 at halftime, and the lead continued to steadily grow. At IU’s media day in September, IU head coach Mike Woodson mentioned Thompson among a group of players who could help improve the team’s outside shooting…

For the first time in around seven months, game day at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is here. Indiana men’s basketball hosts Marian Saturday at 3 p.m. in the first of two exhibition games for the Hoosiers. The game will air on BTN+, which requires a subscription. The IU radio network will carry the game like always. It’s important to exercise restraint when watching exhibition games. It’s a preseason game. It’s highly unlikely that any specific thing you see from Indiana on Saturday will signify anything about the long-term outlook for the team. Nonetheless, the Hoosiers are back. And here are…

Indiana football’s season hasn’t gone according to plan. At the bye week — two-thirds of the way through the schedule — IU sits at 3-5, 1-4 in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers have dropped five straight games after pulling out three wins in a row to start the season. Even this deep into the season, the team has more questions than answers — and the answers it has have not all been positive. After the Rutgers loss, we took a big-picture look at where the program stands after a tumultuous two-season stretch. Without rehashing too much of those numbers, let’s…

Steve Downing just wants his team to see the picture. As director of athletics at Marian University, he spends plenty of time around the Knights’ men’s basketball program. He said the players don’t know much about his background, as a prominent Indiana Hoosier in the 1970s. So when Marian plays IU in an exhibition game at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall this weekend, he’ll share a meaningful part of his past with the team. The Knights are set to arrive in Bloomington on Friday. At some point that day, the team will tour Assembly Hall and Cook Hall — arranged by…

So now what? Indiana (3-5, 1-4 Big Ten) wasted a good start in a 24-17 loss at Rutgers (4-3, 1-3). It’s IU’s fifth straight defeat, and barring a shocking upset of either Penn State or Ohio State, Indiana will miss a bowl game for the second consecutive season. The Hoosiers head into the bye week with a lot of questions. Some short-term, some big picture. One of the widest-lens queries is simple: in which direction is the program heading? After IU’s offense struggled in 2021, head coach Tom Allen fired offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan and hired Walt Bell. In 2021,…

So if Indiana doesn’t beat Rutgers, it…

Indiana women’s basketball has talent. The Hoosiers open the 2022-23 season ranked No. 11 in the AP Poll, and boast what may be an overall stronger and deeper roster than last year’s team that reached the Sweet 16. Indiana has two returning All-Americans in Grace Berger and Mackenzie Holmes, but the team’s ceiling could ultimately swing on how well several newcomers adapt to a new situation. IU made headlines in the spring by adding three transfers: forward Alyssa Geary (Providence), guard Sydney Parrish (Oregon), and guard Sara Scalia (Minnesota). Scalia gives the Hoosiers something they didn’t previously have on the…

As Indiana football moves on from its close loss to Maryland and prepares for an important road game at Rutgers, here are a few notes, quotes, and bits of analysis around the team. McCullough receiving national attention Freshman linebacker Dasan McCullough was one of the highest-touted recruits in IU football history. And so far, he’s lived up to the billing. The Athletic named McCullough to its midseason freshman All-America team on Tuesday, one of four linebackers on the team. He was the lone IU representative in the squad. Three other Big Ten teams placed players on the team, including two…

Despite Jack Tuttle’s intention to enter the transfer portal, he will remain Indiana’s backup quarterback. Tuttle’s news trickled out Monday morning, and IU head coach Tom Allen confirmed it at his weekly press conference. Back in August, the NCAA instituted windows for the transfer portal, meaning Tuttle can’t actually go into the portal until December 5 — the day after the College Football Playoff field is selected. He’ll remain with the Hoosiers through the end of the season. Allen met with the senior last week and discussed this, and the situation won’t impact the backup quarterback picture for Indiana. “I…

As Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa received medical attention on the field at Memorial Stadium Saturday, IU head coach Tom Allen talked to his defense. The Maryland standout suffered an apparent knee injury, and had to be carted off the field. Redshirt freshman Billy Edwards Jr. warmed up by the Terrapins sideline, and Allen gave his players a quick scouting report on what to expect from him. The Hoosiers led by three points, but they had most of the fourth quarter still to play. And they now had to make a big adjustment on the fly. They talk about backup quarterbacks…
