The scoreboard at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall may have said that IU lost to Northwestern by one point, but the game was not really that close. It required a ridiculous Trey Galloway moonshot buzzer-beater to get the final score to 84-83, and IU closed the game on a 13-5 run during the last minute. And while the Hoosiers deserve credit for refusing to give up late in the game, their effort was the reason they were in that spot to begin with. IU head coach Mike Woodson said his team was outworked not just by Northwestern, but also on Thursday…

Indiana women’s basketball standout Grace Berger is back. The senior is starting for the Hoosiers on Sunday at Northwestern after an injury cost her more than a month of game action. The game tips off at 3 p.m. ET on BTN+. The All-American missed eight games after suffering a knee injury early in IU’s game against Auburn in the Las Vegas Invitational on November 25. She was initially ruled out indefinitely, but seemed to be making progress. She no longer needed crutches to get around, and later ditched the knee brace. But no timetable was given on her return, until…

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Indiana opened Thursday’s game at Iowa playing its best basketball of the season. The Hoosiers completely steamrolled Iowa in the opening 10 minutes. IU bullied the Hawkeyes and took advantage of their extremely poor defense. Indiana got whatever it wanted offensively. But the end result was far too familiar. The Hoosiers squandered a 21-point lead as Iowa escaped with its third-largest comeback in program history and a 91-89 win. And IU left Carver-Hawkeye Arena with far more questions than answers. Race Thompson suffered a right leg injury in the first half that kept him out for…

Trayce Jackson-Davis missed IU’s last game against Kennesaw State for precautionary reasons due to back pain, and he practiced without contact until Monday. But the senior appears to be back for Indiana’s game at Iowa on Thursday. The senior is dressed for warmups at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Xavier Johnson remains out indefinitely after undergoing surgery for a foot injury suffered at Kansas. He traveled with the team to Iowa City, though he won’t play Thursday. But the senior is sporting a walking boot with no crutches, and he put up stationary shots during IU’s pregame shootaround.

On a hot summer day in 2019, some of the top girls basketball players in the Fort Wayne area gathered at a local gym. Vernard Hollins, director of the Always 100 AAU program, was working with an international player, and he wanted to put her in one-on-one situations against other skilled athletes. The gym was small, and on this day, the heat inside was sweltering. But those circumstances didn’t affect that Israeli visitor, 15-year-old Yarden Garzon. She’d already played with Israel’s U16 national team in the European Championships, and was ready to take her game to another level. So facing…

Indiana women’s basketball freshman Yarden Garzon is typically mild-mannered on the floor. Whether she’s struggling or lighting it up, her stoic expression rarely changes. So when she came away with a steal in overtime against Nebraska and let out a roar, it spoke volumes. Indiana pulled away from the Cornhuskers in that extra period on Sunday by holding them scoreless. And after a tough weekend of self-reflection, the Hoosiers had a lot of emotion to finally let out. “Yarden’s not an emotional kid. Sara Scalia’s not an emotional kid. But there were moments where there was some emotion. And you…

BLOOMINGTON — Coming off its first loss of the season, Indiana women’s basketball faced a big test. The fourth-ranked Hoosiers hosted Nebraska, one of the stronger teams in the Big Ten, at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. And the Cornhuskers pushed IU hard. The game was tight the entire way, with neither team leading by more than seven points in regulation. Even the standard 40 minutes wasn’t enough to separate the Hoosiers and Huskers, as they went to overtime tied at 62. And Indiana clamped down defensively in overtime, holding Nebraska scoreless through the entire period. That propelled IU to a…

The transfer portal, through both incoming and outgoing activity, played a big part in shaping Indiana football’s 2022 roster. With that in mind, here’s a look at how those outgoing transfers from 2021 fared after entering the portal. QB Michael Penix Jr. Penix raised eyebrows across the country with his play at Washington this season, under former IU offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer. Penix led the nation with 357 passing yards per game, threw for 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions, and led the Huskies to 11 wins and an Alamo Bowl victory. He placed in the top 10 in Heisman Trophy…

Something was off for Indiana women’s basketball all afternoon Thursday at Michigan State. It had become a foregone conclusion this season to see the No. 4 Hoosiers overcome days like that and find ways to win. But this time, they couldn’t. Michigan State (9-5, 1-2 Big Ten) never let IU find a rhythm, and the Spartans dictated the whole game. And they came out 83-78 winners, handing IU its first loss of the season. “We’re disappointed. We dug ourselves a little hole in the first half, and then fought our way back to pull within striking distance at halftime. Second half,…
