Tom Allen clearly recalls the moment that cost quarterback Dexter Williams II a full year. During a spring practice in 2021, Williams — then a redshirt freshman — ran to his right on a play. He planted his foot, then cut back to his left side. He limped off after the play, but it seemed an innocuous injury at first. When Allen later learned Williams had torn his ACL, he was stunned. “I vividly remember it because it was one of those (moments) like, ‘He did what?’ Never thought it would have caused that type of injury,” Allen said. “Sometimes…

Coming into this 2022-23 season, Indiana women’s basketball had a lot of questions. IU lost Ali Patberg, Nicole Cardaño-Hillary, and Aleksa Gulbe — three players who helped lead Indiana to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament in two straight seasons — after last year ended. The Hoosiers brought in a lot of new faces to fill the gaps, both through the transfer portal and in their freshman class. In theory, IU had a team that could be deeper and have more balance than years past. But that was only on paper until the team physically took the court this…

Indiana women’s basketball faced its first big test of the season Monday, when the 12th-ranked Hoosiers faced No. 11 Tennessee in Knoxville. And IU passed that test with flying colors. Indiana held off the Lady Volunteers for a 79-67 win, one of the biggest in program history. IU (3-0) was in control for most of the first half, and led by as much as 16 in the third quarter. But Tennessee battled back, and cut the lead to 61-57 early in the fourth quarter. But IU wasn’t fazed by the counterattack in a road environment. The Hoosiers responded and built…

Jalen Hood-Schifino has made a strong impression through his first two college games. And he’s still just scratching the surface of his potential. The freshman has yet to have a big scoring game in the regular season. He just wasn’t firing a lot of shots against Morehead State on Monday, and he had a tough shooting game against Bethune-Cookman. Hood-Schifino went 2 for 8 from the field Thursday, including 0 for 5 from 3-point range. He did go 4 for 5 at the free-throw line, helping him get to eight points. But even when his shot is off, he’s making…

COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the second week in a row, Dexter Williams II breathed some life into the Indiana offense once he took over at quarterback. Williams entered Saturday’s game at Ohio State — a 56-14 Buckeyes win — during the first quarter, when the Hoosiers already trailed 21-0. Junior Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak started the game, but Williams subbed in after three consecutive three-and-outs. And immediately — on his first play — Williams ran for 16 yards, IU’s first first down of the game. That drive ended in a touchdown. IU head coach Tom Allen said the team planned…

While Indiana men’s basketball dismantled his Bethune-Cookman squad on Thursday, Wildcats assistant Billy Garrett felt a little conflicted. Obviously, Garrett was coaching his players and took no pleasure from a 101-49 defeat. But this was no ordinary road game for him. His father, Bill Garrett, is an Indiana legend: while playing for IU basketball from 1947-51, he became the first African-American player in Big Ten history. He was an All-American in 1951. Garrett was inducted into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984, and the on-campus intramural center was named after him in 2020. Bill held several jobs around…

With Indiana football set to take on No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday, IU has plenty to worry about. But for as much of those concerns would come from the talent on the other sideline, the Hoosiers have a lot of internal issues to focus on. Here are a few of those points, identified during Monday’s media availability with head coach Tom Allen, offensive coordinator Walt Bell, and defensive coordinator Chad Wilt. Health issue on the offensive line IU’s offensive line had another rough day against Penn State, and during the game, they added injury to insult. Freshman Josh Sales…

Preseason All-American Trayce Jackson-Davis missed Indiana’s exhibition game against Marian with an injury, and then played the second exhibition against Saint Francis and the regular season-opener against Morehead State with his right hand wrapped. During a media availability over Zoom on Wednesday, IU head coach Mike Woodson clarified it’s a thumb injury for the senior. He doesn’t know how long Jackson-Davis will have to keep playing with his hand wrapped. “I think he had a severe sprain in the thumb area. (Team trainer) Tim Garl padded it just to give him some relief, and it seems to be working for…
