Indiana men’s basketball is back. The Hoosiers open the 2022 regular season against Morehead State on Monday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. IU has high expectations this year, entering this year as one of the favorites in the Big Ten. Here are a couple reasons it might be a big year for the Hoosiers — and a couple reasons it might not. Pro: IU’s bench depth is stronger than last year’s The Hoosiers already have four of their five main starters from last season back, in Miller Kopp, Race Thompson, Xavier Johnson, and preseason All-American Trayce Jackson-Davis. And with…

After Indiana football’s dreadful performance against No. 15 Penn State, it’s time for some hard truths about the program and its coaching staff. It’s not a football issue for Indiana. It’s a money issue. This started to become evident during the last month, as Indiana’s now-six-game losing streak grew. The games, themselves, never reached “rock bottom” level; IU was in all of those contests in the second half for some amount of time. But as Indiana slogged through this game — with nine straight offensive possessions without a first down, and just 11 total first downs — it became increasingly…

Indiana football returns from its bye week facing a tough test. The Hoosiers host No. 15 Penn State Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. and will air on ABC. Indiana (3-5, 1-4 Big Ten) is on a five-game losing streak, and could be switching quarterbacks. Head coach Tom Allen has been noncommittal about who his starting signal-caller will be. Junior Connor Bazelak edged out senior Jack Tuttle in a tight battle in preseason camp, and sophomore Dexter Williams II provides some intrigue as a more mobile option. “We will move forward with that…

2022 was an important season for Aaron Casey. He came in off a disappointing junior season, by all accounts. He played in every game, but started just once. His performance never stood out enough to earn a bigger role, as he finished with modest numbers. Micah McFadden and Cam Jones primarily held down IU’s linebacker spots, and Casey rotated in. With McFadden and James Miller gone this year, Casey’s time finally arrived. IU head coach Tom Allen and defensive coordinator Chad Wilt challenged Casey heading into the offseason, and Allen said the senior attacked that training the right way. Now,…

Indiana men’s basketball pulled away with ease in its second exhibition game. The Hoosiers took control in the first half, and rode it to a 104-59 win over Saint Francis Thursday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington. The Cougars hung in at the very beginning, as the teams entered the first media timeout tied at 11. But IU took over from there, outscoring Saint Francis 42-13 in the rest of the first half. As a team, Indiana shot 65 percent from the field, 61 percent on free throws, and 37 percent from 3-point range. Indiana committed nine turnovers while…

After his team lost to Rutgers for its fifth consecutive defeat, IU head coach Tom Allen said that every area of the team would be evaluated during the bye week. That included the most important position on the field, quarterback. And coming out of the bye, the only thing that’s clear about IU’s quarterback position is a lack of clarity. Once it was apparent Connor Bazelak was the starter — after the Illinois game — he spoke at the podium for every weekly press conference. But he did not appear on Monday. Allen, when asked about the quarterback situation during…

Indiana men’s basketball took care of business in its first of two exhibition games Saturday, pulling away quickly for a 78-42 win over Marian at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers opened the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back. Senior Race Thompson and freshman Malik Reneau both hit double-figure scoring in the first half, including three 3-pointers by Thompson. Indiana led 42-21 at halftime, and the lead continued to steadily grow. At IU’s media day in September, IU head coach Mike Woodson mentioned Thompson among a group of players who could help improve the team’s outside shooting…

For the first time in around seven months, game day at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is here. Indiana men’s basketball hosts Marian Saturday at 3 p.m. in the first of two exhibition games for the Hoosiers. The game will air on BTN+, which requires a subscription. The IU radio network will carry the game like always. It’s important to exercise restraint when watching exhibition games. It’s a preseason game. It’s highly unlikely that any specific thing you see from Indiana on Saturday will signify anything about the long-term outlook for the team. Nonetheless, the Hoosiers are back. And here are…

Indiana football’s season hasn’t gone according to plan. At the bye week — two-thirds of the way through the schedule — IU sits at 3-5, 1-4 in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers have dropped five straight games after pulling out three wins in a row to start the season. Even this deep into the season, the team has more questions than answers — and the answers it has have not all been positive. After the Rutgers loss, we took a big-picture look at where the program stands after a tumultuous two-season stretch. Without rehashing too much of those numbers, let’s…

Steve Downing just wants his team to see the picture. As director of athletics at Marian University, he spends plenty of time around the Knights’ men’s basketball program. He said the players don’t know much about his background, as a prominent Indiana Hoosier in the 1970s. So when Marian plays IU in an exhibition game at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall this weekend, he’ll share a meaningful part of his past with the team. The Knights are set to arrive in Bloomington on Friday. At some point that day, the team will tour Assembly Hall and Cook Hall — arranged by…
