As Indiana football moves on from its close loss to Maryland and prepares for an important road game at Rutgers, here are a few notes, quotes, and bits of analysis around the team. McCullough receiving national attention Freshman linebacker Dasan McCullough was one of the highest-touted recruits in IU football history. And so far, he’s lived up to the billing. The Athletic named McCullough to its midseason freshman All-America team on Tuesday, one of four linebackers on the team. He was the lone IU representative in the squad. Three other Big Ten teams placed players on the team, including two…

Despite Jack Tuttle’s intention to enter the transfer portal, he will remain Indiana’s backup quarterback. Tuttle’s news trickled out Monday morning, and IU head coach Tom Allen confirmed it at his weekly press conference. Back in August, the NCAA instituted windows for the transfer portal, meaning Tuttle can’t actually go into the portal until December 5 — the day after the College Football Playoff field is selected. He’ll remain with the Hoosiers through the end of the season. Allen met with the senior last week and discussed this, and the situation won’t impact the backup quarterback picture for Indiana. “I…
As Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa received medical attention on the field at Memorial Stadium Saturday, IU head coach Tom Allen talked to his defense. The Maryland standout suffered an apparent knee injury, and had to be carted off the field. Redshirt freshman Billy Edwards Jr. warmed up by the Terrapins sideline, and Allen gave his players a quick scouting report on what to expect from him. The Hoosiers led by three points, but they had most of the fourth quarter still to play. And they now had to make a big adjustment on the fly. They talk about backup quarterbacks…
Indiana football opens the second half of the season with one of its most important games so far. The Hoosiers (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) host Maryland (4-2, 1-2) Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN2. It’s a critical game for Indiana, starting the second half of the season in need of a win. If the Hoosiers drop this game, they would — in all likelihood — have to beat Rutgers, Michigan State, and Purdue to reach a bowl game. The margin for error would be little to none. IU head…
As the Montverde (Florida) Academy boys basketball team celebrated its GEICO Nationals victory in April, Malik Reneau and Jalen Hood-Schifino hugged on the court. And that’s when Reneau knew. The pair had grown close in the more than two years they played together and knew each other. Reneau decommitted from Florida a couple weeks before that, and he had an opportunity available to play with Hood-Schifino at Indiana. In that jubilant moment, Reneau realized that’s what he wanted. That was a few weeks before he officially committed to IU, but in his heart, he knew he wanted to stay with…
Tom Allen reached the tipping point. He knew Indiana’s offensive line has not played well enough to win for much of the season. It was a make-or-break year for the unit, after its struggles in 2021 prompted a lot of internal questions about processes and leadership. And they have not yet rose to the challenge. So Allen made a move. Out went offensive line coach and run game coordinator Darren Hiller, up stepped Rod Carey into his spot. The program announced the change Sunday afternoon. “There’s a standard that we play with and want to play with, and I didn’t…
Indiana missed several key players during its loss to No. 4 Michigan, including cornerback Jaylin Williams, wide receiver D.J. Matthews, and tight end AJ Barner. But perhaps the biggest absence was linebacker Cam Jones. He suffered a foot injury during the Nebraska game, though he didn’t come out of the game or limp off noticeably. IU head coach Tom Allen after the Michigan game said the team received word of his status on Sunday afternoon. “It’s going to be several weeks at minimum,” Allen said. “Cam is a special player. (It’s hard) to just plug another guy in there and…
Indiana’s offense finally ended its first quarter slump against Michigan. But with one streak broken, another troubling one has emerged. For the first time all season, the Hoosiers scored a touchdown in the opening 15 minutes. But for the second game in a row, IU did not score in the second half and could not move the ball in the fourth quarter. Against Nebraska in Lincoln last week, IU finished with five yards of offense in the final quarter. It somehow got worse on Saturday, albeit against one of the top teams in the country. Indiana recorded -12 yards of…
Before a big crowd, Indiana men’s and women’s basketball kicked off their 2022-23 seasons with vigor. The lower bowl at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall was nearly full for this year’s Hoosier Hysteria. The teams and coaches were introduced, with walkout songs, t-shirt tosses, and some dance moves. The players competed in a few competitions — Chloe Moore-McNeil and Miller Kopp teamed up to win the 3-point contest, and Mackenzie Holmes, Race Thompson, and alum Collin Hartman won the skills competition. Here are some things that stood out from the festivities. ————— Woodson pumps up fans IU’s head men’s basketball coach…
Indiana’s last two weeks have gone awry, for many reasons. But the Hoosiers will look to put those games behind them with a big opportunity on Saturday. IU (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) will host No. 4 Michigan (5-0, 2-0) at Memorial Stadium Saturday at noon. The game will air on FOX, with their Big Noon Kickoff show set to air live from outside the stadium leading up to the game. Michigan is coming off a 27-14 win at Iowa. Indiana, meanwhile, lost in disappointing fashion, getting shut out in the second half in a 35-21 Nebraska home win. IU head coach…
