Despite Jack Tuttle’s intention to enter the transfer portal, he will remain Indiana’s backup quarterback. Tuttle’s news trickled out Monday morning, and IU head coach Tom Allen confirmed it at his weekly press conference. Back in August, the NCAA instituted windows for the transfer portal, meaning Tuttle can’t actually go into the portal until December 5 — the day after the College Football Playoff field is selected. As Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa received medical attention on the field at Memorial Stadium Saturday, IU head coach Tom Allen talked to his defense. The Maryland standout suffered an apparent knee injury, and had to be carted off the field. Redshirt freshman Billy Edwards Jr. warmed up by the Terrapins sideline, and Allen gave his players a quick scouting report on what to expect from him. Indiana football opens the second half of the season with one of its most important games so far. The Hoosiers (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) host Maryland (4-2, 1-2) Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN2. It’s a critical game for Indiana, starting the second half of the season in need of a win. As the Montverde (Florida) Academy boys basketball team celebrated its GEICO Nationals victory in April, Malik Reneau and Jalen Hood-Schifino hugged on the court. And that’s when Reneau knew. The pair had grown close in the more than two years they played together and knew each other. Tom Allen reached the tipping point. He knew Indiana’s offensive line has not played well enough to win for much of the season. It was a make-or-break year for the unit, after its struggles in 2021 prompted a lot of internal questions about processes and leadership. And they have not yet rose to the challenge. Indiana’s offense finally ended its first quarter slump against Michigan. But with one streak broken, another troubling one has emerged. For the first time all season, the Hoosiers scored a touchdown in the opening 15 minutes. But for the second game in a row, IU did not score in the second half and could not move the ball in the fourth quarter. Before a big crowd, Indiana men’s and women’s basketball kicked off their 2022-23 seasons with vigor. The lower bowl at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall was nearly full for this year’s Hoosier Hysteria. The teams and coaches were introduced, with walkout songs, t-shirt tosses, and some dance moves. Indiana’s last two weeks have gone awry, for many reasons. But the Hoosiers will look to put those games behind them with a big opportunity on Saturday. IU (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) will host No. 4 Michigan (5-0, 2-0) at Memorial Stadium Saturday at noon.
