The IU basketball program will celebrate Indiana Athletics Hall of Fame member and Big Ten trailblazer Bill Garrett at its regular season opener against Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, the program announced on Tuesday via release. The contest will be celebrated officially as the ‘Bill Garrett Game’ to recognize the 75th anniversary of the season when Garrett broke Big Ten Basketball’s unofficial color barrier. The 2023-24 NBA season tips off on Tuesday evening. Seven former Indiana Hoosiers are on active rosters as the league begins its 78th regular season. On opening night, three of the former IU players will be on national television in marquee matchups. Jalen Hood-Schifino and the Los Angeles Lakers will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. ET against defending NBA champ Denver on TNT. Hood-Schifino has been dealing with a knee injury and may not play. IU basketball freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako was arrested in Bloomington early Sunday morning. Zach Osterman of the Indy Star reported the news first. The freshman forward was booked on a pair of charges: criminal trespass, and resisting law enforcement. Each is a Class A misdemeanor. A report existed on the Monroe County Sheriff’s Dept. website overnight before Mgbako posted bond. The Daily Hoosier is working to confirm more details.
