As two of the Big Ten’s new coaches in 2017, Ohio State’s Chris Holtmann and Indiana’s Archie Miller were often compared.
On Wednesday, Holtmann met the same fate as Miller, three years later.
According to multiple reports, Holtmann has been fired midseason by the Buckeyes.
Holtmann outshined Miller early in his career.
In his first five seasons in Columbus, Holtmann won 20 games each year including 25 in year one. He also made the NCAA Tournament in five straight seasons, but was never able to get past the Round of 32.
The story has been much different lately.
Ohio State has gone just 30-29 overall, and 9-24 in the Big Ten over the last two seasons.
Some reports indicated IU showed interest in Holtmann in 2021 during their coaching search. And he was a popular name on hot boards in 2017 when the Hoosiers hired Miller, who likely would have been hired by OSU if he was still available in 2017.
Holtmann went 6-1 head-to-head against Miller. That dynamic did little to help Miller’s cause. Now Mike Woodson has gone 4-1 against Holtmann.
The transfer portal is now open for Ohio State’s players. Miller and Indiana offered point guard Bruce Thornton out of high school. IU’s relationship with Thornton is probably better now. Current assistant Yasir Rosemond is a fellow Atlanta area native who used to train Thornton. So the Hoosiers will no doubt at least examine the fit if he enters the portal.
The Buckeyes also have two class of 2024 signees who could reopen their recruitments.
Juni Mobley is the No. 6 point guard in the class and No. 40 overall player. Colin White is the No. 25 small forward and No. 123 player overall. Indiana was involved with both players but never offered a scholarship. White is less of a need for IU since they have small forward Liam McNeeley in the class. Mobley could be a name to watch if he asks out of his letter of intent.
Coaching changes have the potential to change the balance of power in conferences and recruiting. So where Ohio State turns next will be interesting to watch.
Ironically, Miller’s brother Sean is likely to get a serious look, along with IU alumnus and current Florida Atlantic coach Dusty May.
