With the extra year of college eligibility largely filtering out of the system next year, the high school class of 2025 will take on greater significance. A lot of teams are going to have a lot of roster openings.
And Indiana should be one of them.
So as the recruiting focus starts to shift away from the transfer portal this spring and now towards the rising high school seniors, we’ll be watching to see if Indiana can maintain its recent run of recruiting momentum.
Last week we told you Indiana is expected to get an official visit from Pennsylvania-based 5-star 2025 guard Meleek Thomas.
And now, multiple reports in the last couple weeks have indicated 2025 Virginia-based 5-star wing Nate Ament is also planning to take a near-term official visit to IU.
“I haven’t set anything in stone yet, but I’m going to be going to Indiana soon,” Ament told Rivals national analyst Rob Cassidy on Saturday.
“With Indiana, their head coach used to be a big-time big coach in the NBA and coached big-time NBA guys. They want to keep developing me as a versatile player. They would help improve my game.”
A 5-star according to both On3 and Rivals, Ament is considered the 15th best player in the 2025 class according to the On3 Industry Average.
Although he is 6-foot-9, IU has been talking to Ament about the success Jalen Hood-Schifino had in their program.
“We (Indiana and Ament) are taking a good bit, they are trying to get me to set up a visit, so we are working on some times there,” Ament told On3’s Jamie Shaw a couple weeks ago.
“They talk to me all the time about Jalen Hood-Schifino. He was a first-round draft pick this year, and they think we are kind of similar in how we play. They talk about how they can develop me in the same way they developed him. So it is kind of unique to be able to directly see that.”
As should be expected with a player of Ament’s caliber, the competition is intense. Virginia, Duke, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville and Michigan are some of the other key schools involved.
A big forward with wing skills, Ament is a prospect similar to 5-star former IU target Asa Newell in the 2024 class.
Indiana offered Ament a scholarship last September.
As a junior at Highland H.S., the Warrenton, Va. product averaged 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.0 blocks and 3.7 assists per game, while guiding the Hawks to a 24-12 record. On the Adidas circuit this spring (Team Loaded, Virginia), Ament is shooting 39.4 percent from three.
