BLOOMINGTON — After Michigan men’s basketball defeated Indiana at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Sunday, Wolverines head coach Dusty May addressed a question regarding the newly-open IU job and whether he’d have interest.
The word ‘no’ did not appear in his response.
“That stuff’s crazy. I love being at Michigan. I love our team. We’re fighting like crazy. That’s it. This place is my foundation, but I’m very, very happy at University of Michigan,” May said. “Came here to win a game, and mission accomplished.”
Michigan held on for a 70-67 victory over the Hoosiers, who have now lost seven of their last eight games.
May has obvious ties to the IU job. The Greene County, Ind. native attended Indiana from 1996 to 2000, and served as a student manager for the men’s basketball program under Bob Knight.
The Hoosiers will be searching for a new head coach after this season, with Mike Woodson set to step down from the position at the end of the year.
May received a loud ovation from IU fans before the game, which he said he appreciated.
“First of all, it’s flattering. When you have the path that I had — and have, I’m still on the same path — it makes you feel good, because what’s your competitive advantage as a student manager that transferred in as a marginal Division II player? And you just think back and it’s like, man, really, all I did was show with great energy and passion for this game and helping people every day,” May said. “And because of that, I think people always saw something or believed in me, and then you get to this point.”
May has led the Wolverines to a strong season in his first year with the program. UM is tied for second in the Big Ten at 10-2, with an 18-5 overall record. The Bracket Matrix projects Michigan to earn a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to taking the job in Ann Arbor, May compiled a 126-69 overall record at Florida Atlantic over his first six seasons as a head coach. He led the Owls to a shocking Final Four appearance in 2022-23, and followed that up with a strong 25-9 campaign last year that ultimately did not yield an NCAA Tournament win.
