St. Mary’s graduate transfer Evan Fitzner is transferring to Indiana. He has one year of eligibility remaining and will be eligible to play immediately. Indiana has now filled all 13 available scholarships for the 2018-19 season, meaning that Zach McRoberts will likely play the 2018-19 season as a walk-on unless another scholarship frees up.
The 6-10 forward averaged 5 points and 3 rebounds last season. He has shot better than 40% from 3-point range in each of his first three seasons.
Fitzner told the Bloomington Herald Times that it was his 3-point shooting that attracted the Hoosiers the most:
“One of the things they talked to me a little bit about was the lack of shooting this last year,” Fitzner said. “I think I can fill a role in that regard and help with floor spacing. They just said they needed someone who can shoot it.”
Here are the San Diego native’s career stats at St. Mary’s:
According to KenPom, Fitzner’s offensive rating in 2017-18 conference play ranked 4th in the West Coast Conference.
Saint Mary’s Head Coach Randy Bennett had this to say about Fitzner on 1260 AM in Indianapolis this afternoon:
“He’s really gifted offensively. We wanted him back. I didn’t see it coming, but he came back from Spring Break, said he wanted to explore. When you told me it was Indiana, I was thrilled for him. He will enhance their program”
While the addition of Fitzner might raise some eyebrows based on a high level look at his statistical profile, we think adding a big man that can shoot makes sense. You can see our assessment of him and the logic behind adding him to the team here.
