Memphis’ Penny Hardaway is expected to add former IU basketball coach Mike Davis to his staff, according to multiple Wednesday reports.
Davis is best known as the successor at Indiana to legendary coach Bob Knight. He led the Hoosiers to the national championship game in 2002.
The 63-year-old Davis served as Indiana head coach from 2000-06, and he compiled a 115-79 overall record and a 55-41 Big Ten Conference ledger. He was 9-2 against Purdue.
Davis was the first coach in IU history to open his tenure with three straight 20-plus win seasons and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Davis directed the Hoosiers to a share of the 2002 Big Ten championship. He led IU to postseason appearances five of his six years as head coach (four NCAA and one NIT), and the Hoosiers defeated 22 nationally-ranked opponents in his tenure.
Davis most recently spent six seasons as the coach of Detroit Mercy. He and the school agreed to a mutual parting of ways in March following a 1-31 season.
Davis, who has also been a coach at Texas Southern and UAB, holds a 412-360 career record with nine NCAA Tournament appearances (four at Indiana, one at UAB and four at Texas Southern).
The last time Davis was an assistant coach was the 1999-2000 season under Knight at Indiana. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Alabama, his alma mater.
