32 years after he led Jeffersonville to a state title as a player, Sherron Wilkerson repeated the accomplishment as the head coach.
With IU coach Darian DeVries in attendance, Wilkerson’s Jeffersonville squad beat Fishers 67-66 in overtime to win the Indiana 4A crown. The outcome ended a 43-game winning streak by Fishers.
Wilkerson led Jeffersonville to the title in just three seasons as head coach. And Saturday evening was a climactic moment in his redemption story.
Following his state title as a player, Wilkerson was named a 1993 McDonald’s All-American. He played at Indiana from 1993 to 1996, losing the full 1994-95 season due to a broken leg.
But he was kicked off IU’s team by Bob Knight in 1996 after a series of off-court issues. After finishing his college career at Rio Grande, Wilkerson played overseas, was an assistant coach at several stops including at Lamar under Pat Knight, and eventually got his life back together.
Now 49, he’s helping to create memories for young athletes that will last a lifetime.
