The fifth edition of the College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings and bracket release is coming on Tuesday evening.
Indiana fell to No. 10 last week coming off their loss to Ohio State, but there were plenty of outcomes over the weekend that might impact the Hoosiers in this week’s update. Losses by Ohio State and Miami sit at the top of that list.
Here are 19 projections for IU football by well known national outlets ahead of the fifth rankings and bracket reveal. As a reminder further below are the rules for the 2024 CFP selection and bracketing process.
The fifth CFP rankings and bracket reveal show will air live Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN. It will be followed by the final CFP announcement on Sunday.
CFP PREDICTIONS FOR INDIANA AHEAD OF FIFTH RANKINGS REVEAL ON DEC. 3:
One thing that seems clear after this past weekend, Indiana only solidified their place in the CFP with a 66-0 win over Purdue and the results that took place around them, including a Clemson loss to South Carolina. All 19 predictions we looked at have IU in the field as the No. 10 seed or better.
The following are bracket seed predictions, not rankings. A rule that requires four conference champions occupy the top four seeds can cause a team to be seeded worse than their ranking.
Staying in the No. 10 spot is by far the most popular pick for Indiana tomorrow. Just one individual has Indiana hosting a first round game as a No. 5 through 8 seed. Here are 19 predictions for Indiana’s seed in the CFP bracket:
- On3: 10
- CBS Sports: 10
- Pat Forde/SI: 10
- Brett McMurphy/Action Network: 10
- The Athletic/NY Times: 10
- USA Today Network: 10
ESPN has 13 different staff members making projections of the field:
- Andrea Adelson: 7
- Kyle Bonagura: 10
- Bill Connelly: 9
- David Hale: 10
- Eli Lederman: 10
- Chris Low: 10
- Harry Lyles Jr.: 9
- Max Olson: 9
- Adam Rittenberg: 10
- Mark Schlabach: 10
- Jake Trotter: 10
- Paolo Uggetti: 10
- Dave Wilson: 10
Summary of projections:
High – 7
Low – 10
Average – 9.7
The final reveal will come Sunday at Noon ET following this weekend’s conference championship games.
After the CFP Committee announces their latest reveal on Tuesday, we’ll take a look at scenarios, if any, that could help push IU into hosting a first round game.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE 2024 COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF
- The CFP rankings are independently determined by a committee and not in any way based the AP Poll, Coaches Poll, etc.
- The top four seeds go to the highest-ranked conference champions, with a fifth conference champion making the bracket too.
- The top four seeds get a bye.
- The fifth conference champion will be seeded where it was ranked or at No. 12 if it is outside the top 12 rankings. Non-conference champions ranked in the top four will be seeded beginning at No. 5. Because of this, the seeding, 1 through 12, could look different than the final rankings.
- First round games will be played on campus, and hosted by the team with the better seed (i.e. No. 5 hosts No. 12, and so on).
- The selection committee will assign the four highest-ranked conference champions to Playoff Quarterfinals hosted by bowls. This will be done in consideration of historic bowl relationships, then in consideration of rankings. For example, if the Sugar Bowl hosts a Playoff Quarterfinal and the SEC champion is ranked No. 1 and the Big 12 champion is ranked No. 3, the SEC champion would be assigned to the Sugar Bowl and the Big 12 champion would be assigned elsewhere.
- With the four highest-ranked conference champions assigned to bowls, their four Playoff Quarterfinal opponents will be dictated by the bracket (i.e., No. 1 vs. No. 8/9 winner, No. 4 vs. No. 5/12 winner, No. 2 vs. 7/10 winner; No. 3 vs. 6/11 winner.)
- The College Football Playoff bracket will follow the selection committee’s rankings, with no modifications made to avoid rematches between teams that may have played during the regular season or are from the same conference.
- The bracket will remain in effect throughout the playoff (i.e., no re-seeding).
- The highest seed will receive preferential placement for the Playoff Semifinal bowl assignment.
- The final CFP rankings will be released on Dec. 8, following the conference championship games.
