IU football’s class of 2025 has been in a major state of flux over the last four months since offensive lineman Matt Marek became the first commit among rising high school seniors.
The class has gone from zero to 17 commits, and even seen a couple decommits during that time.
Over the last 10 years, a span that covers three different IU football coaches, Indiana’s average position in the national team recruiting rankings is No. 52. That’s according to the 247Sports Composite average of the main national recruiting outlets during that time. Over that period IU’s class has been ranked as high as 25th (in 2022), and as low as 69th (in 2023).
Anytime we talk about recruiting rankings, and especially football, we feel compelled to remind you how they can be unreliable at the individual level. See, for example, now third-year New York Giants linebacker Micah McFadden, who was a 2-star recruit and the No. 168 outside linebacker in the 2018 class according to 247Sports.
But at the team ranking level, you do tend to see the teams who perform best on the field also landing the best high school recruits. Nevertheless, there are still variables, like how well does a coaching staff identify and evaluate talent, and how well do they develop players once they arrive on campus?
With all of that in mind, let’s take a look at where Indiana’s current class of 2025 stands in the national team rankings.
It’s worth noting, a team’s number of commits influences the rankings. IU currently has more 2025 commits than 12 of the other 17 Big Ten teams, so there could be a decline once that averages out.
INDIANA’S CLASS OF 2025 (As of 6/27/24)
On3: 48th overall, 14th in the Big Ten
247Sports: 42nd overall, 11th in the Big Ten
Rivals: 42nd overall, 11th in the Big Ten
If IU’s class remains inside the top-50, it will be just the third time in the last 10 years they’ve accomplished that.
