Three former IU basketball players have been in the news this week.
Here are the quick updates on Jalen Hood-Schifino, Eric Gordon and Cody Zeller.
HOOD-SCHIFINO SIGNS WITH PHILADELPHIA PER REPORT
Former IU one-and-done guard Jalen Hood-Schifino is on the move again.
Three weeks ago Hood-Schifino was dealt by the Lakers to the Utah Jazz as part of the Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic swap. He was waived by the Jazz a couple days later.
According to a Friday report by ESPN’s Shams Charania, Hood-Schifino is now headed to Philadelphia.
“Former Lakers first-round pick Jalen Hood-Schifino has agreed on a two-way NBA contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, sources tell ESPN,” Charania reported on X.
Hood-Schifino was chosen in the first round of the 2023 June NBA Draft with the 17th overall pick. He has yet to find a consistent role in the league. He appeared in just 21 games for the Lakers as a rookie and averaged 5.2 minutes and 1.6 points per game. This season Hood-Schifino has played in two games and averages just two points in seven minutes per contest.
The Pittsburgh product started all 32 games played for IU in 2022-23. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after he averaged 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 0.8 steals per game.
ERIC GORDON OUT FOR REST OF SEASON
Hood-Schifino will be joining another former IU one-and-done star in Philadelphia, but they won’t see the floor together.
76ers guard Eric Gordon underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist Wednesday and will be reevaluated in approximately three months, the team announced.
The 36-year-old veteran will miss the rest of the season.
Gordon is shooting 40.9% from 3-point range and averaging 6.8 points, 1.7 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 39 games (13 starts) this season.
ZELLER WON’T PLAY THIS SEASON
Cody Zeller was traded to Houston three weeks ago, but he is not with the team and not expected to play this season according to a report by The Athletic.
The 12-year veteran was dealt by Atlanta. He has yet to appear in an NBA game this season. Zeller’s last action came last year with New Orleans.
According to The Athletic’s reporting, both Atlanta and Houston did not intend to play Zeller and he has not been with either team. Instead his salary has been utilized as a bargaining chip. Zeller is in the first year of a three-year, $11 million contract. The last two years are not guaranteed.
Zeller was the No. 4 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
