Indiana head men’s basketball coach Mike Woodson has no complaints about Trey Galloway.
The fifth-year senior has dealt with inconsistency this season, and his numbers are mostly down from last year. During IU’s ugly 25-point loss to Illinois, fans relentlessly booed Galloway all game, even when he wasn’t on the court.
The guard has had some good games sprinkled in amongst the middling performances and the rough outings so far this season. But overall, Woodson knows Galloway’s effort has remained consistent
“Trey Galloway came off a major knee surgery, probably a knee surgery that probably takes a little over a year to to bounce back. He’s giving us all he’s got,” Woodson said during a Zoom press conference on Tuesday. “Trey’s been a workhorse over the years for me. I’ve gotten on Trey probably more than anybody that’s still left on this team. I love everything about him, because I do know he tries his best when he’s out there on the floor.”
The Culver, Ind. native is averaging 7.2 points, 4.1 assists, 2.1 turnovers, 2.2 rebounds, 0.7 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game this season. He’s shooting 41.3 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from 3-point range on 2.9 attempts per game, and 63 percent at the free-throw line.
Since the start of the new year, galloway has scored 7.8 points per game and shot 36 percent from the field. But those numbers would look much better if not for a particularly bad performance at Iowa (0 for 2, zero points, one assist, four turnovers).
After that Illinois game, Woodson moved Galloway to the bench for Anthony Leal against Ohio State on Friday. Galloway responded with seven points on 3-for-9 shooting, six assists, and five rebounds. It’s unclear whether Galloway will return to the starting lineup against Northwestern on Wednesday — and how a potential Malik Reneau return to action could cause ripple effects with that decision.
But no matter what role Galloway is playing for the Hoosiers, Woodson has a lot of trust in his veteran.
“He’s had his ups and downs, but hey, I’m willing to go to war with him every time he steps out on the floor. So I’m good with Trey,” Woodson said. “He’ll figure it out as we continue to go. He hasn’t played bad basketball. I think he’s been pretty good off and on for us, and he’s helped us win some games. And we’re going to need him to stay positive and keep working because that’s what he does when he’s in practice. And a lot of that you see in the game sometimes, because he plays hard.”
