The quest for a ninth national title for the IU men’s soccer program will carry into 2019.
Indiana had defeated Maryland during the regular season and took down the Terrapins in the Big Ten tournament championship game on penalty kicks.
On the game’s biggest stage at the College Cup in Santa Barbara, California, however, it was Maryland that made the big plays. The Terrapins won by a final score of 2-0.
Maryland scored a first half goal in the 37th minute off a corner kick that IU was unable to clear.

After the Terrapin goal, Indiana increased its attack but was unable to breakthrough before halftime.
Indiana continued to play forward in the second half and had several close calls but couldn’t come up with the equalizer as Maryland always seemed to have an answer on its back line.
A Maryland header off a free kick in the 79th minute would provide the dagger.

It was a difficult ending for a highly successful season for IU. The Big Ten regular season and tournament champions finish the season with a 20-3-1 record, but came up short at the College Cup for the second straight year.
Maryland will face Akron on Sunday night in the national championship match.
