For the first time since 2020, Indiana football is bowl-eligible.
The 23rd-ranked Hoosiers defeated Northwestern on Saturday, 41-24, for their first win in Evanston, Ill. since 1993. It sent them to 6-0 for just the second time in program history — their only other 6-0 start was the 1967 Rose Bowl season. And it made IU the first team in the country this year to cross the six-win threshold to become eligible for a bowl game.
It’s a historic accomplishment for Curt Cignetti in his first season as Indiana head coach. He’s the first IU head coach to ever start his tenure 6-0, and he’ll become the second coach in program history to reach a bowl game in his first season, after Bill Lynch did it in 2007. He’s two wins away from tying James M. Sheldon — in 1905 — for the most wins by a first-year IU head coach.
Indiana now heads into its first of two bye weeks this season, with one of its biggest matchups of the year coming after that: a showdown against Nebraska.
