It isn’t clear if or when Xavier Johnson will return for Indiana this season.
The sixth-year guard is out indefinitely with only eight games left in Indiana’s regular season — and only eight regular season games left in his college basketball career.
Coach Mike Woodson doesn’t have much in the way of solid information on Johnson, but what he did say following his team’s 76-73 win over Ohio State did not sound encouraging.
“I don’t know when X is gonna be back,” Woodson said. “He’s doubtful.
“He’s doubtful, so it’s gonna put a lot of pressure on (Trey Galloway), and Gabe, and Anthony (Leal) and CJ (Gunn) — guys that are coming in the game to handle the ball and make basketball plays.”
“He’s just doubtful right now. I don’t know how long, really, I don’t.”
Johnson injured his elbow when he fell to the floor after attempting a dunk against Iowa a week ago.
Johnson traveled with the team to Columbus and sat on the Indiana bench with his left arm in a medical device.
On the season, Johnson is averaging 8.3 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 40.7 percent from the field.
Indiana is 8-6 in the games Johnson has played, and 6-3 in the games he has missed.
