The Mike Woodson era is over.
The NCAA Tournament bracket was announced on Sunday evening, and Indiana was left out of the field.
The Hoosiers (19-13) were the second highest graded team left out of the field, the CBS broadcast crew revealed.
The Hoosiers had been projected by the majority of bracketologists to make the field. But North Carolina, Texas and Xavier all got the nod over IU. And West Virginia was the first team out, one spot ahead of the Indiana.
The news came as a surprise to many.
“I gotta say Indiana is the one (team left out) that sticks out to me,” Seth Davis said on the CBS broadcast. “They had a win at Michigan State, at home against Purdue. (They were) 4-13 in Quad-1, so more (Quad-1 wins) than North Carolina, and unlike North Carolina, who had a Quad-3 loss at home to Stanford, Indiana did not have any losses outside of Quad-1, so I’m curious to hear the (Committee’s) reasoning.”
Indiana will not play in the NIT or any other postseason tournaments, a source confirms with The Daily Hoosier.
A late season surge that saw IU win five of their final seven regular season games including wins over Michigan State and Purdue was not enough to put Indiana in the field. Indiana suffered multiple double-digit losses during the season that hurt their profile, including to Louisville, Gonzaga, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.
Indiana made the field in each of Woodson’s first two seasons as head coach but missed each of his last two years. His retirement was announced last month.
AD Scott Dolson will now turn his full attention to finding a replacement for Woodson.
