Indiana’s non-conference opponents for 2021-22 are slowly trickling out. A fifth was revealed last week in a column by Chuck Landon of the Charleston (W.Va.) Gazette Mail, who reports that Marshall has Indiana on its schedule as one of its only “money” games this season so far.
Indiana also has Merrimack, Louisiana-Lafayette and Northern Kentucky on its schedule, the first two according to Jon Rothstein and Northern Kentucky according to D1Docket.com. The Hoosiers also have their Crossroads Classic opponent set — Notre Dame — and they will participate in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and likely the Gavitt Games with the Big East.
Marshall finished 15-7 in 2020-21 with a 9-5 record in Conference USA, but lost its first game of the conference tournament to Rice and ended its season. The Thundering Herd lost their second leading scorer Jarrod West to transfer to Louisville, but they bring back first-team All-Conference USA pick Taevion Kinsey, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard who averaged 19.5 points per game last season.
Marshall finished the season No. 92 nationally according to KenPom.com. Head coach Dan D’Antoni, the older brother of NBA coach Mike D’Antoni, is entering his eighth season in Huntington. He holds a 128-99 (.564) record as the head coach at Marshall and he has recorded six straight winning seasons and a 2018 NCAA Tournament appearance.
Indiana is 3-0 all-time against the Thundering Herd, but the schools have not met since a 91-67 Indiana win in 1990. The game will mark Marshall’s first trip to Bloomington since 1940.
