Indiana women’s basketball battled through a tough 67-63 win over Southern Indiana on Wednesday night inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Heading into the matchup, the Hoosiers were looking for a momentum-building win before heading into Big Ten play, but issues on the offensive end made that impossible.
Indiana (6-3) struggled offensively throughout the night, shooting 21 for 59 from the field, including a 9-for-30 clip from beyond the arc. SIU’s defensive pressure also gave the Hoosiers some issues, as they finished with 12 turnovers.
The difference maker for the Hoosiers came from the free throw line. IU finished 16 for 26 from the charity stripe, while the Eagles made just 5 on 8 attempts.
Shay Ciezki was one of the few Hoosiers who looked comfortable on offense throughout the night. She finished with 17 points, and shot 5 for 8 from the field, including three made 3s. The guard also provided the dagger on the night, hitting a key 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to seal the win.
Yarden Garzon continues to look like Indiana’s No. 1 option on offense but suffered a streaky night from the field. She finished with 14 points on 5-for-18 shooting. Garzon particularly struggled from the 3-point arc, where she finished 2-for-12.
Chloe Moore-McNeil and Lilly Meister each added 11 points apiece. Moore-McNeil also had her fair share of struggles from the field, finishing 4-for-13 overall.
Southern Indiana (7-2) had a fairly efficient night offensively, going 25-for-55 from the field, and shooting 8 for 12 on 3-pointers. The main issue for the Eagles was turnovers, as they finished with 15.
Indiana opens their Big Ten season at Penn State on Friday at 1 p.m. ET.
