IU women’s basketball senior guard Grace Berger helped Team USA to an overall 6-0 record and a gold medal as it defeated host Puerto Rico in the 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup on Saturday night, 74-59, at Coliseo Roberto Clemente.
Through the duration of the tournament, the Louisville, Ky. native averaged 6.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game. She posted her best game in the quarterfinals against the U.S. Virgin Islands with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Berger shot 44 percent from the floor and went 81.8 percent at the free throw line.
It marked Berger’s first competition with USA Basketball in her career. She joined four other players from the Big Ten in the event including Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller of Maryland, Naz Hillmon of Michigan and Veronica Burton of Northwestern.
The 6-foot Berger started all 27 games in 2020-21, averaging 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists. She shot 44.1 percent from the floor and 74.4 percent from the free throw line and led the nation in triple-doubles with three.
Berger helped lead IU to its first Elite Eight appearance in March.
